AJASS LEADERSHIP

EVITA CARUSO, OTTO CONLAN & SOFIE MAZZOTTA

On Monday 20th November, the four College Captains and the Faith and Mission Committee Captains were fortunate enough to attend the annual AJASS Leadership Day, held at Mount St. Joseph Girls College, Altona. Along with 40 other Student Leaders from eight AJASS schools, including students from Tasmania and Canberra, we had the opportunity to get to know each other and learn how Father Julian Tension Woods and Saint Mary MacKillop established and led the Sisters of St Joseph. We were introduced to the four Josephite values of Creative Courage, Mutual Respect, Conscious Compassion and Intentional Inclusivity, values that we all found to be important principles that we could use as leaders and bring back to share with our school community.

As part of the Leadership Day, each school was asked to bring an item of charism, which is a form of spiritual gift that represents each school. As a group, we decided to pick different flowers from around our school grounds, to symbolise the differences, diversity and individuality within our school community. We tied these flowers together with a ribbon, which illustrated how these different characteristics connect and bring our school together. Each school brought a different item, and presented their charism, describing its significance within their school, with one bringing their yearbook, and another bringing posters for each school house. It was very insightful to listen to each presentation and discover the different values held by each school, and what ideas we could implement within our own.

As Student Leaders, we were all able to explore the Josephite Charism, and what it meant to be part of the Josephite tradition and follow in the footsteps of Father Julian Tension Woods and Saint Mary MacKillop.

We would like to thank Mount St. Joseph Girls College for hosting us, Mrs Haeusler for her support of this program, and Mrs Howison and Mrs Wright for their generosity in taking us to the event. Our participation in this AJASS Student Leadership Day would not have been possible without your support and we are all extremely grateful for having this wonderful opportunity. We look forward to putting our learning from the day into action next year in our leadership.
