Year 6 students used their critical and creative thinking skills to analyse and take responsible action on complex problems in their language and literature classes. Working in small groups they exercised initiative in making reasoned ethical decisions.  For this assessment students worked individually, in pairs or a group of three to create a video campaign of three minutes on a topic of their choice. Their goal was to use image and persuasive language to mobilise and involve people in their campaign topics, to educate the public and to change behaviour about their topics. They created a campaign video, logo and slogan to spread awareness of their chosen issue. Additionally, groups worked together to reflect on their learning through responding to the service-learning outcomes including:

  • What personal strengths did we bring to this unit?
  • What did we enjoy about being involved in creating a campaign?
  • What did we find challenging about being involved in creating a campaign?
  • What would we do differently next time? 

2. Developing new skills:

  • What new skills did we learn through this unit?
  • How did we demonstrate that we were RISK-TAKERs during this unit?
  • What skills or content knowledge could you use in another subject area?

 

 3. Planning service activities:

  • What topics did we originally discuss and which one did we choose for our campaign?
  • How did we delegate roles?
  • How did we all help with the planning process?

 4. “Stick-ability”:

  • How well were we able to stick with a long-term service project?
  • How did this experience help us understand the complexity of campaigning?

 

 5. Collaboration:

  • Describe how you collaborated and shared responsibility for tasks and decision making.
  • What problems did you encounter and how did you solve them?

 6. Understanding other cultures and people:

  • How relevant to developing international mindedness was our topic?
  • What did we learn about issues the world is facing through our campaign and topic?

 7. Treating others with respect:

  • How well did our words and actions show people that we are CARING?
  • How did campaigning teach us to be respectful of people who may experience difficulties and hardship in their lives?
