As we close the chapter on 2025, its essential to reflect on one of the most fundamental skills that supports students success across all areas of learning: writing. Writing is not just a subject to be taught its a powerful tool that enables students to communicate, think critically, and engage deeply with content. This year, our school has continued to emphasise the importance of explicit teaching in writing, and the results speak volumes.
Explicit teaching means breaking down the complex skills of writing into clear, manageable steps. It involves modelling techniques, providing structured guidance, and giving students timely, focused feedback. This approach ensures that every student, regardless of their background or starting point, can develop confidence and competence in writing.
Why is this so crucial? Writing is the medium through which students express their understanding, make arguments, and demonstrate creativity. Success in writing open doors to higher academic achievement, better career opportunities, and active participation in society. Moreover, strong writing skills enhance learning in every subject, from science and history to the arts.
In 2025, our teachers have embraced explicit teaching strategies to scaffold writing skills, from sentence structure and vocabulary development to organising ideas and extending depth of analysis. We have seen how regular, deliberate practice combined with clear instruction helps students achieve greater fluency and precision.
As we look ahead to 2026, we will continue to champion writing as a key driver of success. By prioritising explicit teaching and providing students with the tools and support they need, we empower them not only to meet curriculum standards but to become confident communicators and lifelong learners.
Wishing you all a joyous and reflective holiday season.
