Careers & Pathways

Hi Bemin community,

Term 4 has been an extremely busy and exciting time, filled with a range of incursions and excursions. Students were able to use these experiences to shape their pathway plans for their senior schooling.

We welcomed the Future Ready program and an Automotive Workshop here on campus, and students also participated in excursions to William Angliss Institute, Monash University, The University of Melbourne's  Science Gallery, and Victoria University Polytechnic campus. In addition, we held a VET information session for our families of next years Year 11 Vocational Major program, sharing details about the off site training offered to our students.

Read on for some recounts from some of our students.

We sincerely hope you and your families have a safe and relaxing break over the summer, we are looking forward to see you energised in the New Year!

Future Ready Incursion

This term Crazy Ideas College visited our school to deliver the Future Ready program, which blends individual reflection with collaborative group activities that helps young people build the knowledge and skills needed for life beyond school, encouraging them to imagine a positive future, explore the changing world of work, and consider potential career pathways.

It was great to see how the students engaged with the content exceptionally well.

William Angliss Excursion

This term we took a group of year 10 students to William Angliss Institute for an immersive experience designed to ignite students’ curiosity and inspire their aspirations in the hospitality and culinary industries. Through this visit, students gained a firsthand look at life at William Angliss and discover the wide range of academic and career pathways available beyond Year 12.

We were taken  for a tour through Angliss Hotel School suites, state-of-the-art commercial kitchens, Chocolate Laboratory, Aviation training facility and more. Students learned about life at Angliss and the pathways into careers in Foods, Tourism, Events, and Hospitality.

Recap by Ahmad El Jaseem

I am very appreciated of being able to be a part of the William Angliss journey. It was a very good opportunity to be able to see very artistic and highly intelligent students perform such beautiful art piece made from chocolate and fondue cakes. The piece were just beautiful and looked unbelievable. I am really proud for the students that took the time and effort to make such beautiful work.

After the tour we got seated at their restaurant and was served with beautiful dishes that was presented very classy and topped off with a beautiful dessert all made by some of the students of William Angliss.

I am very grateful to have taken part in this excursion and hope to be attending more excursions like this.

Auto Maintenance Workshop

Handbrake Turn runs a car mobile workshop where students interested in learning about car maintenance join the session and explore career opportunities that exist within the automotive industry.  Students at Bemin had the opportunity to take part in the workshop last month. See what one of the students had to say.

Recap by Umar Bhurt

The incursion taught us how to maintain a car. It did this by demonstrations like how to lift tyres, replace and fix them, and replace them safely without casualties. It also taught us different parts of a car engine like checking if the fuel is quality or expired, how it cools down after work, and how oil fuel and electric parts of an engine work in symbiosis. Overall, it was good with the teaching of practical skills and common sense for beginners to either the car industry, people who want a car, or both.

Science Gallery Excursion

On the 18th November year 10 students had an exhibition tour of the Science Gallery, where experienced facilitators introduced students to key ideas and artworks. Students participated in group discussions and activities, prompting them to think critically about the works followed by a workshop that explores the important role that fire plays in the history and development of Country. Students  interrogated perceptions of fire by analysing and understanding Indigenous fire practices and fire ecology through a series of hands-on investigation activities using plant materials, research data and tools such as fire drills. To help students learn how fire is used to care for the land by exploring Indigenous knowledge and fire ecology. The workshop teaches the importance of fire in nature, how Indigenous people use fire safely, and how this knowledge helps protect and manage Country today.

Victoria University Polytech Excursion

On the 25 November, VM students had the opportunity to visit the Victoria University TAFE Sunshine campus for a tour of their facilities and learn about the courses VU offer. This was valuable experience, especially for students interested in pursuing a trade as their chosen pathway. During the visit, students took part in a presentation and a scavenger hunt organised by VU facilitators. It was a great day!

Monash University Excursion

This term we took a group of Year 10 students to visit Monash University’s campus and explore its diverse facilities during the Step on Campus Day. This immersive experience is designed to ignite students’ curiosity and aspirations by giving them a firsthand look at university life and the wide range of academic and extracurricular options available beyond year 12

Recap by Pavreet Joia

I recently had the opportunity to go on a trip to Monash University Clayton campus with a group of students from Bemin Secondary College, and it ended up being such a fun and educational experience. We got to hear from a Monash representative who explained the different ways to get into their courses and what uni life is actually like, which made everything feel a lot more real. She also took us on a tour of the campus, but it had to be cut short because it suddenly started hailing out of nowhere. Even with that, the day was still great,  we had an hour to explore the food court for lunch, and the commute to and from school with everyone made the whole trip feel even more memorable. Overall, it was a really exciting and eye-opening day and I would wish for more experiences like this for myself and others alike.
