PAW and PST: Visual Arts Semester 2: Term 4, 2025

In Prep ST and AW, students explored a variety of painting methods and media using primary colours. They created colourful boomerang artworks by mixing primary colours to make secondary colours. Students enjoyed using their hands to make handprints and their fingerprints to create dot patterns, resulting in vibrant and creative designs inspired by their learning about colour mixing.

In PAW and PST, students explored the art elements of line, pattern, and colour through a bubble printing and stamp printing activity. They experimented with different printing techniques by creating bubble prints—mixing water, detergent, and food colouring, then blowing bubbles with a straw before pressing paper over the bubbles to capture the print. Students used a variety of colours to produce layered and vibrant effects, then enhanced their designs by stamp printing geometric shapes to create patterns. Some students extended their learning by experimenting with more complex patterns, while others focused on developing confidence in using the printing materials. The session concluded with a silent gallery walk, where students reflected on their work by observing and discussing the colours, patterns, and effects they had created.

1BW and 1GC: Visual Arts Semester 2: Term 4, 2025

In Year 1GC and 1BW, students explored the art elements of line, space, and movement through a construction activity inspired by the Abstract artist Jackson Pollock. They learned about Pollock’s unique style of creating energetic and expressive artworks, discussing how he used movement and line to show emotion and rhythm. Students then developed their paper construction skills by cutting, folding, and twisting strips of paper to form 3D lines. They arranged and pasted these strips onto foam boards, experimenting with different directions, overlaps, and heights to create a sense of movement and depth in their final abstract sculptures. The finished artworks beautifully reflected the students’ understanding of Abstract Art, showcasing dynamic lines and creative compositions inspired by Pollock’s work.

2AP and 2MC: Visual Arts Semester 2: Term 4, 2025

In Year 2AP and 2MC, students explored the art elements of line, shape, pattern, space, colour, and movement through a mixed media paper construction project. They designed and created their own paper bag puppets, incorporating a variety of basic paper techniques such as tearing, folding, twisting, rolling, scrunching, cutting, crumpling, and bending. Students carefully considered how to use colour, pattern, and shape to bring their puppet characters to life, ensuring their designs showed personality and creativity. They also practised using joining techniques successfully to attach different parts and layers of their puppets. The completed artworks demonstrated imagination, craftsmanship, and a strong understanding of how different art elements can work together in a fun and expressive design.

3EN and 3MM: Visual Arts Semester 2: Term 4, 2025

In Year 3MM and 3EN, students explored the art elements of line, shape, space, and repetition through the creation of their own Chinese paper lanterns. They continued to develop their designs by carefully applying tissue paper to the inside of their lanterns, adding vibrant colour to the negative spaces. Students experimented with tearing and gluing small pieces of tissue paper in different ways to enhance their designs and create a stained-glass effect. Once their designs were complete, they constructed their lanterns into three-dimensional forms by folding and gluing the tabs together with precision and care. To conclude the activity, students self-assessed their artworks using a rubric, reflecting on their creativity, craftsmanship, and use of the art elements. The finished lanterns were bright, detailed, and beautifully showcased the students’ developing construction skills and artistic understanding.

4EK and 4JR: Visual Arts Semester 2: Term 4, 2025

In Year 4EK and 4JR, students continued exploring line, shape, pattern, and space as they developed their Picasso Mixed Media 3D Face Masks. They used a range of mediums, materials, and tools to construct and refine the head and facial features of their masks, drawing inspiration from Pablo Picasso’s abstract and cubist style. Students carefully considered how to apply colour and texture to enhance the expressive qualities of their designs, experimenting with layered materials, patterns, and bold contrasts. They also added embellishments and decorative details to personalise their masks and bring their artistic visions to life. To conclude the lesson, students self-assessed their artworks using a rubric, reflecting thoughtfully on their creativity, craftsmanship, and effective use of the art elements.

5AT and 5JM: Visual Arts Semester 2: Term 4, 2025

In Year 5, students learned about colour and how to create a landscape by drawing contour lines of hills and mountains inspired by the artist Georgia O’Keeffe. They explored warm and cool colours and used chalk pastels on black paper to design layered hills, mountains, and a sun or moon. Students experimented with line, shape, colour, value, balance, and space to create modern, expressive landscapes that showed depth and contrast.

In Year 5AT and 5JM, students learned about line, shape, pattern, colour, repetition, and unity as they transformed their Japanese Carp Windsock Streamers into three-dimensional artworks inspired by the artist Louis Dumoulin. They followed a guided demonstration to carefully glue a strip of white cardstock onto the mouth of the fish, ensuring that the structure would hold its shape. Students then added glue along the top fins, the edge of the tail, and the top corner of the mouth before stuffing the body with newspaper or soft filling to give their carp a realistic form. Through this hands-on construction process, students explored how design elements can be used to create movement and unity in an artwork, producing vibrant and dynamic windsocks that celebrated both Japanese culture and creative craftsmanship.

6ZG, 6RM and 6JT: Visual Arts Semester 2: Term 4, 2025

In Year 6RM, 6ZG, and 6JT, students learned about the art element of form as they created their own three-dimensional Mexican masks. They explored how to transform a flat design into a sculptural piece by folding and shaping their masks into three-dimensional forms. Students carefully selected materials from those provided, using glue and joining techniques to secure the mask edges into place. Throughout the process, they focused on adding detail and structure, experimenting with colour, pattern, and embellishments to reflect the vibrancy and cultural significance of traditional Mexican masks. The final artworks showcased the students’ understanding of form and construction, as well as their creativity and attention to detail.

Happy creating,
