Food Technology at TLSC

Building Skills Through Culture, Connection and Creativity
It has been a fantastic period of learning in Food Technology across Years 7–12, with students demonstrating creativity, collaboration, and a growing confidence in the kitchen.
A major highlight this term was our Food Tasting Around the World experience as part of Harmony Week. Students embraced the opportunity to explore Food, Culture and Connection, sampling a wide range of culturally diverse dishes while researching their origins and significance.
This experience not only broadened students’ palates, but also deepened their understanding of how food connects people, families and traditions across the globe.
Our Year 7 students also undertook their Summative Task: Communal Breakfast Design which brought together both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Students were challenged to design and prepare a breakfast dish using either a wet or dry cooking method.
As part of the task, they researched recipes, justified their chosen cooking method, created a recipe card, and completed a food order sheet before participating in a practical cooking session.
Many of our Year 7 students also took the initiative to practise their recipes at home before presenting to the group, which was fantastic to see.
The culmination of this task was a shared breakfast feast, where students prepared and served their dishes to a communal table. It was wonderful to see students not only showcasing their cooking skills, but also demonstrating respect and collaboration, complimenting each other’s work, assisting with clean-up, and in some cases, sharing personal or cultural connections to their chosen dishes.
This learning experience highlighted key Food Technology skills including accurate measuring, understanding cooking methods, maintaining safety and hygiene standards, and effectively documenting recipes. Most importantly, it fostered a strong sense of community within the classroom.
We are incredibly proud of the effort, enthusiasm and maturity shown by our students, and look forward to seeing their skills continue to grow throughout the year.
