Year 1/2 Term 2 Overview

Year 1/2 Curriculum Overview

Welcome back to Term 2! We hope that you have had an enjoyable and restful break and are ready for a big term of learning. This term is looking to be busy with some incursions/excursions planned, Grandparents Day, Mother’s Day and our SHINE day with Gen Bryant! We have also planned some engaging and meaningful learning opportunities throughout the term that link to our RE and Geography units.

Important notes:

  • Winter Uniform: Students are required to wear their winter uniform during Terms 2 and 3. Hats are not needed during these terms.

  • Parent Helpers: Thank you to everyone who volunteered and helped in our classrooms last term, we really appreciated your support. If you are available and would like to assist this term, please add your name to the roster. Please note that when helping, you will be supporting both classes Parent Sign In Sheet and

    Timetable

  • Reading Record: Please remember to initial your child’s Reading Record each day when you hear them read aloud. The book sent home is an easy, independent text, so the focus is on helping your child understand what they are reading, not decoding words. As they read, pause to ask questions about the story. This might include ‘what has happened so far, what might happen next’, rather than a general question at the end of the text.  A great prompt is asking your child to retell the story to you, or asking ‘what happened in the beginning/middle/end’.

  • Homework: Homework will be sent out on Tuesday, but not each week. It may include a selection of 3 tasks across any subject area. Please encourage your child to complete it over multiple sittings, not all at once.

  • Homework will complement what we are learning in the classroom and your child should be able to complete it mostly by themselves. Please just help with reading the instructions if necessary.

  • Headphones: A reminder to please bring a set of named over-ear headphones to school. These will be kept for exclusive use by your child only.

Geography

Our unit this terms focuses on Geography and it is guided by our big question: How can exploring and understanding the world help with our connection to land?

Students will investigate the features of different outdoor places, including rivers, lakes, beaches, mountains, hills and forests. They will learn what makes places in Victoria unique, how we can care for them and connect their learning to Indigenous perspectives of the land.

Religious Education

In Religious Education throughout Term 2 we will reflect on where we see God’s creation in the world and develop an understanding of God as our Creator. Students will learn that everything God created has value and purpose and that we are called to care for the world and all living things. We are all Stewards of Gods Creation, our beautiful world.

This term we will have a strong focus on comprehension strategies. Students will learn to develop their own literal and inferential questions about the text. If students are able to generate and answer their own questions about a text, it demonstrates a deeper level of understanding. Literal questions usually start with who/what/when/where and the answer can be found directly in the text. Inferential questions often start with why or how and require a deeper level of thinking and comprehension. We will also use visualisation through RIDER and continue developing our skills in retelling stories.Students will continue to explore a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts, building their understanding that all writing has a purpose. We will examine persuasive texts, focusing on their specific language and structural features. Later in the term, we will move into narrative writing, where students will work on improving and ‘bumping up’ their writing to effectively entertain their readers. We are continuing to follow the routines and processes of the PHORMES spelling program. This includes daily review, introducing new ‘weird words’, followed by a focus on a specific spelling pattern/rule each week. Students will keep practicing correct letter formation to ensure their writing is clear and neatly presented on the dotted thirds.

Social & Emotional Learning:

Students will continue to explore and develop their understanding of our School Wide Positive Behavior Matrix. Each week, we will engage in lessons from The Resilience Project, building their emotional literal and supporting their personal and social wellbeing strategies. There will be a strong focus on learning how to express feelings, recognising and responding to emotions, showing kindness and listening respectfully to others.
