Welcome to Year 5!
The Year 5 students have kicked off the year in an amazing way and have settled in seamlessly! We’re so impressed by their positive attitude and their kindness towards one another as they embark on their learning journey. It’s going to be a year filled with challenges and plenty of opportunities to grow into our next leaders. We’re excited to introduce the Year 5 teaching team: Mr. Jones will be leading 5A, Ms. Miller teaching 5B, Miss Armstrong teaching 5C, and Mr. Rowley will be teaching 5D. We’re all eager for an incredible year of learning and good times.
We’ve had a lively start to Literacy in Year 5! We’ve begun reading our class novel, The Wild Robot by Peter Brown, and have been discussing key moments in the story. The students are showing great enthusiasm for the book as we dive deeper into its themes and ideas. In Writing, we’ve been focusing on what we need to include when writing a narrative before revisiting the key skills we need to know for a persuasive text prior to NAPLAN in Week 7.
In Numeracy, Year 5 students have been enhancing their understanding of ‘Place Value’. We’ve been practicing reading and writing six-digit numbers, and breaking them down to better understand the value of each digit. The students have also been exploring time, focusing on converting between 12-hour and 24-hour formats. They’ve enjoyed learning about 3D shapes and their 2D counterparts, and embraced the challenge of building 3D shapes using nets with enthusiasm and determination!
In SEL, we’ve been exploring our school values and discussing why each one is crucial for maintaining happiness and well-being at GPPS. The students applied their understanding of these values by explaining how they can demonstrate them in their everyday lives. We also learned about the significance of our school’s Acknowledgement of Country. We've also begun our learning on the Resilience Project and what we can do to be happy and healthy.
