Welcome to Year 6!
The Year 6 students have made an amazing start to the year and have settled in so well! We are so impressed with their enthusiasm, teamwork, and positive attitudes as they dive into their learning. It's going to be a fantastic year ahead, full of exciting challenges and opportunities for growth. We are thrilled to introduce the Year 6 teaching team: Ms Riolo will be leading 6A, while Ms Huntly and Ms Martin are guiding 6B alongside Ms Miller teaching 6C, and Ms J will be with 6D. Together, we're looking forward to an incredible year of learning, creativity, and fun!
In Literacy, we’ve started reading the novel The Last Bear, which has sparked great discussions and encouraged us to think deeply about themes of nature and survival. Alongside our novel study, we’ve been using our new Literacy New Waves books to help with our daily review, building our skills in reading, comprehension, and grammar. In Writing, we’re focusing on persuasive texts, learning how to use different language and persuasive devices to strengthen our arguments and make our writing more convincing. It’s been a wonderful start to the year, and we’re excited to continue improving our literacy skills in the weeks ahead!
In Numeracy, we’ve been working hard to strengthen our mental maths skills using our new Waves Numeracy books, which have provided great practice and challenges. We’ve also revisited place value, extending our knowledge to include digits in the millions, and developed a deeper understanding of how numbers work. Our work with time has been exciting, as we’ve reviewed both 12-hour and 24-hour time, and used this knowledge to calculate elapsed time in various contexts. Additionally, we’ve been exploring 3D objects, learning how to connect them to their nets, which has helped us visualise and understand their structure.
In Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), we’ve been exploring the emotion of joy and what it really means to feel joy in our lives. Through discussions and activities, we’ve learnt to identify the things that bring us happiness and how we can cultivate a positive mindset. As part of this, we had the opportunity to reflect on our personal goals and hopes for the year ahead by identifying 10 things we are looking forward to in Year 6. It was a wonderful way to connect with our emotions and set intentions for a fulfilling and joyful year!
It’s been a busy and productive start to the year, and we’re looking forward to further developing our numeracy skills!
