5/6 News

We could not be prouder of our Senior students in the way they have started their journeys in Grades 5 and 6. In a jam packed three and a half weeks, we have built relationships, set strong routines and set high expectations of our students, who are rising to the challenge. We have been especially proud of all of our students who put themselves forward for an eagerly sought after leadership role.  Our school is definitely in good hands with the exceptional role-models and kind students we have leading TPS.

Please remember that families are always welcome to pop in to say hello and to see our classrooms before and after school.

Literacy

In Grades 5/6, students have been busily preparing for NAPLAN, investigating using the 'uh oh mountain' to summarise a narrative text in Reading. They are then using this in Writing as a fantastic tool for planning a story. Following on from this, in Reading, they have read many mentor texts, to find the writer's craft (what the writer does to make a story interesting). They found writer's use many devices to make their stories appealing but to name a few, they identified onomatopoeia, rhyme, action verbs, adjectives, similes, hyperbole, emotive words, descriptive words, dialogue, suspense, personification and rhetorical questions. Students then linked this with their writing, to use this to make their 'good' story into a WOW story. And just in-case this isn't enough, students have also been investigating how to incorporate WOW words into their writing by synonym exchanging 'boring' words such as happy, sad, love and angry.

Numeracy

The word Math can often get a lot of our students hearts racing, and when they hear 'Double Math' it starts racing even more! It is our intention to take that anxiety out of hearing the word Math and have them see the inquiry and usefulness of it and that it can be enjoyable. There’s a certain thrill in discovering how numbers work together to unlock new possibilities.

Here are a few tips on how we are making our Math sessions more fun and enjoyable:

  • Breaking it down: Tackle problems step by step rather than getting overwhelmed by the bigger picture.
  • Use real-world examples: Apply math to things you enjoy—whether it's sports statistics, budgeting for hobbies, or solving logic puzzles. You will have seen a Facebook post of students telling us how many times their heart beats in a year, how cool is that!
  • Learn with others: Sometimes, discussing a problem with a friend or a teacher can open up new ways of thinking about things.

National Young Leaders Day - Melbourne

Mr Hogan said YES... (after a little bit of nagging from Mrs Pridham), so the Grade 6 students are all off to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on March 3rd. Our students are in for a huge, jampacked but very rewarding day attending the National Young Leaders Day alongside thousands of other students from other schools all over Victoria. This is an amazing day where our students, will interact with, and hear from amazing leaders from all walks of life. They will attend three sessions with a guest speaker, question time, short videos, learning exercises, student involvement, music and student interaction. The day is all about benefiting our students towards developing their leadership potentials to inspire and influence them to lead themselves and others well.
