Library News
This week St Peter’s College has been making students and staff aware of their mental health during RUOK? week. Both libraries have displays promoting a positive attitude to life as well as the importance of checking in on people to see if they are OK. RUOK? week is important as if you are worried about someone you care about you can have a conversation that could change a life by 1. Ask 2. Listen. 3. Encourage 4. Check in.
‘Check Mates’ by Stewart Foster is one of the books we featured during RUOK week. The novel is about Felix who struggles with his schoolwork as his ADHD makes it hard for him to concentrate. Felix’s mother suggests he spends some time with his grandfather, but he is reluctant at first as his grandfather is always trying to teach him boring chess. However, his grandfather is able to encourage Felix and show him that chess can help him concentrate and open up a new world. Felix’s grandfather stresses that we always have to learn from our mistakes and not make them again. When Felix is competing in a chess tournament his grandfather sends him a poignant note telling Felix never ever give up!
