Prep Newsletter - Term 3, week 7/8

About the last week-

It has been a massive few weeks for the preps. We loved our very first book day! Getting dressed up was so much fun, it was great to participate in the parade with the rest of the school and the visit from illustrator Marc McBride was amazing. The students got to work together to create characters and draw dragons in the hall with the grade 1s and 2s. The students loved attending the Father’s Day stall to select gifts and place them in the bags they designed. We have planning week, footy day and the last week ahead of us before we finish the term.

Literacy-

It has been an enormous step up for the students over the last few weeks. We have introduced 4 and 5 letter words (CCVC, CVCC and CCVCC) into our writing and also two letter ‘ck’ this week. Using elkonin boxes to identify the individual sounds in these words has been essential. We have been supporting our literacy work with activities in reading groups and also completed our writing assessment last week. The assessment was a writing piece based on the stage 5 book ‘The Big Wind Day’. It was pretty incredible to see the improvement the students have made since their term 2 assessment ‘Hot Dog Bob’.

Numeracy-

We have been moving through a number of topics in Maths over the last few weeks. We had a unit on ‘Counting Back’ where there was a big focus on ‘one less’ and counting back a forward from numbers up to 20. We began our data unit last week and the students have done a great job of understanding small data sets and interpreting them to create small graphs. Much of this has been done in our ‘Brain Sweats’ at the beginning of lessons, where students use their whiteboards to record and concrete materials to organise and collect data. We are running our Mass and Capacity units simultaneously in the fine motor room. Hands-on activities have been set up, where students get to test the mass and capacity of different containers with a variety of different materials.

Inquiry-

The students have been doing a wonderful job of delivering their presentations about their ‘special places’ in class so far. A big thank you to all the grown ups for helping the students complete their work and prepare for their presentations.
