Year Three - Spotlight on Learning
Dear Families,
Students participated in some R U Okay Day activities this week. The actual day was Thursday 12th September - a special day annually occurring throughout Australia to highlight the importance of meaningful conversations. Having this day reminds us that we don’t have to be an expert to reach out and ask someone if they are okay. The theme for this year is ‘Ask R U OK?'
R U Ok? Day encourages Australians to check in with others all year round. Research has found that people who are regularly asked if they are okay feel more supported, connected and cared about. Yes it is a special day, but remember life happens every day, and asking if someone is okay should be part of our everyday routines on supporting those around us, who need that little bit of care to know that others are looking out for them. So don’t forget to “Ask: ‘R U Okay?’ any day. 👍
Here are the 4 steps of an R U OK? conversation:
- Ask R U Okay? (How are you travelling?)
- Listen (I’m here to listen if you want to talk more.)
- Encourage action (Have you spoken to your mum, teacher, doctor, etc about this?)
- Check in (Just wanted to check in and see how you are doing)
In Week 9, We have been learning about . . .
Mathematics: Addition and subtraction strategies culminating in students demonstrating their understanding and learning of these by solving number and word problems in different ways, identifying the language and symbols necessary, and giving evidence to prove their answers were accurate.
English: Reading and understanding the iconic poem ‘My Country’ by Dorothea MacKellar. We have also been explaining the vocabulary used in this poem, as well as identifying different types of figurative language used.
Religious Education: The scripture of Jesus: 'Healing a Blind Man' (Matt 25: 35-40). Students have been discussing how Jesus’ treatment towards this blind man demonstrated one of the Catholic Social Teaching Principles - Dignity of the Human Person. Students have also been matching the CST principles to examples.
Integrated Studies: Understanding and developing characters through drama and activities such as improvisation and the game ‘Hot Seat’, as well as creating more detail for a character and setting using props.
Auslan: Reviewing the signs in this unit, including signs for ‘Close the . . .’, What’s on your mind? and My Family.
