Reading:
Both the Grade 4/5A classroom and 5/6A classroom have been continuing their study of the book ‘Wonder’ which is written by Raquel Jaramillo Palacio. These two classes have been able to study the book thoroughly during Reading lessons this term and have just finished reading the novel. Students have been able to include themselves in discussions about the text and what they found interesting, as well as what they learned during their reading of this novel. The Grade 3/4A classroom have been continuing their study of the book “Bad Dad” which is written by David Walliams. Students have really been enjoying their study of this book and find the characters and themes very interesting to learn about.
Writing:
The Grade 3 – 6 students have continued learning about how to write a Procedural Writing text the past few weeks. The Grade 3’s and 4’s are looking forward to beginning the topic of “Readers Theatre” which will be starting in week 4 of this Term. The Grade 5’s and 6’s are looking forward to beginning the topic of “Speech Writing” which will also be starting in week 4 of his term. The next few weeks are very exciting for the students in the Senior Module and all students have started to get excited about the Grade 3-6 Camp which is in Waratah Bay this year.
Different Types of Procedural Writing:
A recipe - How to cook something.
Directions - How to get from one place to another.
A how to guide - How to tie your shoelaces.
Rules - The rules of a game or board game.
Safety procedure - Telling you how to stay safe, for example if there's a fire.
Craft instructions - How to make a paper plane or paper boat.
Instruction manual - How to use a new toy.
What is Procedural Writing:
Procedural writing is a type of writing that explains how to do something step by step. It’s like a set of instructions or a recipe that helps you understand exactly what to do to achieve a certain goal.
In the 3/4 Classroom we made Smiley Faced Biscuits. The students had a great time making them and then writing the steps for how they made it.
Maths:
The senior module has continued working on the topic “Fractions” during math lessons the past few weeks. Students have been able to include themselves in a wide range of activities during the study of this topic. It has been great to see the confidence levels of these students’ academic knowledge grow over the course of this year. The Grade 3 – 6 students should be extremely proud of the hard work and dedication that they bring to mathematic lessons.
Inquisitive Minds
In the 3/4 Inquisitive Minds we have been learning about the Earth and it's place in space.
We've started off by looking at some basic facts like where the Earth sits in our solar system. It's relationship with the sun and the moon. Did you know over 1 Million Earth's would fit in the sun!
