Year 9 & 10
Head of Year, Mr Bradley Cotterell
I would like to acknowledge the positive start our Year 9 cohort has made. This term has marked an important transition, with students experiencing increased academic expectations alongside the growing social demands of secondary school. It has been pleasing to see the cohort respond with maturity, adaptability and a willingness to engage.
Year 9 is a significant stage in a student’s journey — a point where habits, attitudes, and behaviours begin to take shape. Throughout the term, we have focused on three key qualities: independence, integrity, and resilience. These are not just words, but guiding principles that underpin success both in and beyond the classroom. Students have been encouraged to take greater ownership of their learning, make thoughtful choices, and respond positively to challenges.
It has also been fantastic to see such strong participation across school activities. The enthusiasm and support shown for one another reflect a cohort that is developing a genuine sense of community.

Looking ahead, we are excited for our upcoming Year 9 social event, where students will have the opportunity to further strengthen friendships through teamwork and shared experiences.
As we enter the holiday break, I encourage students to take time to rest and recharge. Whether through spending time with family, engaging in physical activity, or simply enjoying some well-earned downtime, this is an important opportunity to reset before Term Two. I look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for the challenges ahead.
Term One has been a full and, at times, demanding start for our Year 10 cohort. The transition into this year level brings a noticeable lift in expectations, and it has been pleasing to see students rise to the challenge and continue to build positive momentum.
A highlight of the term was the Year 10 Social Dinner, which provided a wonderful opportunity for students to connect, celebrate, and contribute to a strong sense of year group community. Events such as these play an important role in fostering positive relationships and school spirit.
As emphasised in our recent Head of Year address, Year 10 is a pathway year, guided by the principles of responsibility and pride. Responsibility is reflected in being organised, meeting deadlines, managing time effectively, and taking ownership of learning. Pride is seen in the effort students apply to their work, how they present themselves, and how they treat others. These habits are not just expectations for now, but foundations for success in senior school and beyond.

Term Two examinations will approach quickly. Success is built through consistent effort over time — not last-minute preparation. Establishing routines at home, using effective study strategies such as practice questions and revision cycles, and planning ahead with a weekly schedule will be key to building confidence and reducing stress.
Alongside academic development, students have also engaged in important wellbeing learning around recognising psychological pressure and manipulation. This has included identifying behaviours such as guilt-tripping, peer pressure, and social exclusion, and understanding how these can influence decision-making. Students have been encouraged to respond with confidence, set clear boundaries, and seek support when needed. Developing these skills supports not only personal wellbeing, but also respectful and positive relationships within the school community.
As the holidays begin, I encourage students to take time to rest and recharge, returning with focus and purpose for the term ahead.
