Around the College
What a cool way to be introduced to Brass instruments history!
As a part of Fabulous Feb, Year 7 classes enjoyed an engaging incursion about the history of Brass instrument. The activity was presented by Katy and Bernie from Brass Bedlam. It was active and chatty in the Wheeler Auditorium as the Year 7s participated in various hands-on activities provided by the presenters. I am confident to say this group of Year 7s really know their music repertoire very well. They were able to recognize 8 out of 12 medleys performed in the opening bars. Special thanks to the Year 7 teachers who supervised the groups during the presentation and to Ms Emilia Roberts, the College Transition Coordinator, for organizing the Fabulous Feb.
If you are a Year 7 interested in participating in the Instrumental Music Program at Nazareth, please complete the instrumental program enrolment form available here:
or email Mr Landid at simon.landid@nazareth.vic.edu.au . Here are some photos of happy students:

VCE Visual Communication Design (Units 3 and 4)
To practise past and present design practices of designers, VCE Visual Communication Design (VCD) Units 3 and 4 students were tasked with designing posters for the band, 'The Rolling Stones' to celebrate their new album and promote an upcoming fictional concert. Students were encouraged to embrace manual methods of the past, such as painting, and use present digital methods, such as Photoshop and Procreate, whilst appropriately incorporating the band’s logo to create the following posters.

Bringing Concepts to Life: Using Paddle Pop Sticks to Teach Visual Communication
Understanding abstract concepts can sometimes be challenging when confined to the pages of a piece of paper or a whiteboard, as our Year 8 Visual Communication class might tell you. Our struggle with oblique and isometric design meant that we needed a new way of learning. To provide a tangible understanding, we introduced paddle pop sticks, allowing students to physically manipulate and construct shapes.
This hands-on approach meant a deeper comprehension and engagement and allowed for a more collaborative approach to learning. We had some meaningful discussions as students bridged the gap between theory and practice. We ended the lesson with you could build the biggest paddle pop stick tower!

Vinnies News
Sign Up day
It was once again fantastic to see so many students attend our sign-up session to be a Vinnie for 2024. Many old faces are returning for another year, joined by new students from Years 7 - 9, volunteering their time and working behind the scenes to make a difference in the lives of people less fortunate. Our numbers have grown to 60!
Our new presidents were elected last week, and it is with great pleasure that I announce Julie Hoang (Year 12) as our 2024 president alongside Abbie Diaz (Year 11) as the vice president. Both students have been members of the Vinnie team for several years and are involved in broader activities within the school. They will do an excellent job leading the team this year.
Easter Raffle
One of the most anticipated events of Term 1 is the Easter Raffle. Hampers will be created very soon, and tickets will be on sale. Students will be able to purchase tickets from Vinnie students during pastoral, recess, and lunchtime and from the Resource Centre. Prices will be $1 a ticket or $3 for five tickets. The hampers will be drawn in the last week of term, which is already passing by so quickly! As in other years, the money raised goes towards supporting the St Anthony’s Tutoring Program, which Nazareth students have endorsed for several years.
As they say, you have to be in it to win it! Let's see if we can raise more money than last year.
Project Compassion
The start of Lent on Ash Wednesday is also the start of Project Compassion. A donation box has been placed in every Pastoral classroom, and we urge ALL students to donate to this very important cause. We encourage students to donate $6 over the 6 weeks, which equates to the price of a coffee. It costs little individually, but collectively, we can make a real difference. The money raised goes to Caritas Australia, which supports various initiatives globally. If you would like to learn more, I have attached short films that tell the story of real people.
