Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden with 3/4KC

Well summer has definitely arrived this week so we have been doing our best to keep our gardens watered and our plants alive.  This week the Tomatoes and Eggplants were out in the garden and at times it was difficult for the students to work out what was a weed or a vegetable plant.  Luckily there were some big clues like small watermelons and pumpkins growing.

In the kitchen, we made some delicious meals including a zucchini frittata using the zucchinis that have been growing in our garden over the summer.  One in particular was so big and so heavy.  Unfortunately, when we opened it, it had become filled with seeds and was quite tough.  We also harvested a small butternut pumpkin, potatoes, silverbeet, corn, beetroot, cherry tomatoes, parsley, spring onions and a baby watermelon.  With our zucchini frittata, we also made a yummy beetroot tzatziki, Italiano salad and some seasonal fruit muffins for dessert.  The muffins were a fruit muffin this time and they were such a pleasant treat after all the dishes were washed and put away.

Thanks to the following parents and grandparents who have helped us in the last fortnight.  Your help is greatly appreciated.  These wonderful people are: Wendy (Naomi’s mum), Kathy (Luka’s Grandma), Lilly (Lucas’ Mum), Cassie (Zayden’s Mum) and Fuji (Matthew’s Dad). We really appreciate the help they provided the students.  If you would like to help your child in 3/4KC throughout the next six weeks, please message me via Seesaw or email me at tsiegert@smdingley.catholic.edu.au

Have a great week and happy cooking!

Student Reflections:

Today in the kitchen garden my group (The eggplants) were making fruit muffins with mango. I think that the muffins are going to be the best but you never know. Also I am excited to see what we are eating today. I got to stir the batter for the muffins and put them in the trays. It was really fun. I hope that my group gets to do muffins again soon.  By Ayla

Today we made a zucchini egg. It was so much fun chopping zucchini and cracking eggs. I went to go harvest some potatoes in cooking and it was so dirty and then we peeled the skin and nearly cut my finger then we chopped it.  By Lucas V
