School Captains Address

Rafael Choi, Crystal Hui, Seojin Hwang & Isabella Young

Welcoming the incoming School Captains and Vice Captains (Rafael, Crystal, Seojin and Isabella) who were handed the baton by the outgoing team. Good luck to you and rest of the 2024 year 12 cohort as you enter the final stretch of your high school journey! And a big well done to the 2023 team (Captains Alexia and Cameron, and Vice Captains Caitlin and Michael) on some excellent leadership over 2023.

Hey everyone!

We hope that everyone is refreshed and having a great Term 1. The past few weeks have definitely been a blur with all the events that have come up – House Swimming Carnival (Congratulations Flannery!), Personal Development Day, Senior Interschool Sport, and much more. We are excited to share a couple of updates from the term so far!

Swimming Carnival:

Everyone had a great time at this year's swimming carnival, as they do every year! With the combination of competitive racing, boat sinking, and thrilling novelty races, JMSS undoubtedly once again showed incredible engagement and house spirit. We are so proud of everyone who participated and gave it their best shot, and we especially congratulate the winners of each age group and everyone who worked so hard to earn house points! We would like to express our gratitude to Ms. Adolf for organising the event and to all the other teachers and students who helped out on the day! Without you, the event could not have gone as smoothly!

We wish the best of luck to all the swimmers heading to Divisionals soon. We all are very proud of you!

Costume Competition:

We were absolutely thrilled to see the amount of submissions and voters for our annual House Swimming Carnival Costume Competition. The participation on the day was absolutely amazing, and we look forward to seeing the creativity at Athletics in May!

The winners of the competition were the ‘SWIMposters’ pictured below:

MHS Exchange:

On the 16th of February, the School Captains and Parliamentarians visited Melbourne High School for a leadership exchange. It was a fulfilling experience that consisted of observing school culture, discussing prominent issues and ways that leaders can combat them, as well as getting to know and network with the Student Representatives.

During our discussion time, we mainly focused on diversity and how our respective schools were impacted by it. It was student-led, with engaging conversations on ways that inclusion can be achieved. Overall, it was an intriguing day with lots of valuable information we can take and apply to our school communities. We look forward to hosting MHS in the near future!

Weekly Bulletin:

The School Captains and JMSS Noticeboard Committee create a weekly bulletin to keep staff and students informed of important events during the week. Keep an eye out for our weekly emails and displays on screens across the school.

Some Final Words:

To our Year 10s and New Year 11s, we hope you are enjoying the start of the term – we know it can be hectic, but make sure to make the most of everything the school has to offer. We hope you guys have an amazing rest of your time here at JMSS, and always make sure to challenge yourself, because who knows, you might even enjoy some of the experiences you never thought you would have!

Year 11s, we know the slight fear of the start of VCE, so it’s important to set up good study habits and routines for yourself. Remember that despite academics being a major part of your life, your mental health and happiness are priorities too! So make sure you make time, and take it easy.

To the Year 12s, how did the time pass by so quickly? It’s the final year and the end of Highschool seems so far yet closer than we could ever imagine. Although it is surely to be a crazy and busy year, we really want everyone to make sure to take breaks and leave time for their hobbies. Take advantage of the opportunities given at school while you still can and have fun! Let’s do our best to stay on top of our studies and avoid burning out. So, please take care of yourself and reach out when you need to.

We hope you enjoy the rest of 2024!

Kind Regards,

Isabella Young, Rafael Choi, Seojin Hwang & Crystal Hui
