The Importance of the IB PYP Programme at Saltwater College

At Saltwater College, we are proud to be an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, delivering the Primary Years Programme (PYP). This globally recognised framework is designed to nurture young learners into compassionate, lifelong inquirers who are prepared for an ever-changing world. The IB PYP fosters academic excellence while ensuring students develop the skills, attitudes, and values necessary to become responsible global citizens.

A core component of the IB PYP is the Learner Profile, which consists of ten attributes: Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-Minded, Caring, Risk-Takers, Balanced, and Reflective.

These attributes are deeply embedded in our teaching and learning at Saltwater College and align closely with our School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) framework and our work with the Respectful Relationships program.

Building Quality Relationships for Quality Learning

John Hendry OAM, a leading advocate for positive education, reminds us that "relationships matter" and that learning is at its most effective when it takes place within strong, respectful, and trusting relationships. He outlines five essential elements of a quality relationship: Trust, Forgiveness, Integrity, Hope, and Compassion. At Saltwater College, we integrate these principles into our daily interactions, ensuring that every student feels safe, valued, and motivated to learn.

  • Trust: Encouraging students to express their ideas openly and engage in respectful discussions.

  • Forgiveness: Teaching students to resolve conflicts constructively and learn from mistakes.

  • Integrity: Guiding students to act with honesty and take responsibility for their actions.

  • Hope: Inspiring students to set goals and believe in their potential.

  • Compassion: Cultivating empathy and care for others within our school and the wider community.

Supporting the Learner Profile at Home

Families play a crucial role in reinforcing the Learner Profile attributes beyond the classroom. Here are some ways you can support your child’s development at home:

  • Inquirers: Encourage curiosity by asking open-ended questions and exploring answers together.

  • Knowledgeable: Read together about different cultures, scientific discoveries, or historical events.

  • Thinkers: Solve puzzles, play strategy games, or discuss real-world problems as a family.

  • Communicators: Encourage storytelling, journaling, and sharing thoughts during family discussions.

  • Principled: Model honesty and fairness in everyday situations and talk about ethical dilemmas.

  • Open-Minded: Explore new foods, traditions, or languages to appreciate different perspectives.

  • Caring: Volunteer as a family or perform small acts of kindness in your community.

  • Risk-Takers: Support your child in trying new activities and embracing challenges.

  • Balanced: Promote healthy habits, including outdoor play, mindfulness, and downtime.

  • Reflective: Discuss what went well in your child’s day and what they learned from challenges.

By nurturing these attributes at home, you strengthen your child’s ability to engage in meaningful learning and contribute positively to our school community. Together, we can build an environment where every student thrives academically, socially, and emotionally.

We thank you for your continued partnership in supporting the development of our learners. If you have any questions or would like further guidance, please feel free to reach out to the school.

Thank you,
