Ski Camp
On Monday 14th August, 48 students, 5 staff and 2 volunteers and 1 pre-service teacher ventured to Harrietville for the annual Year 10 Ski Snowboard Camp. All 48 students elected to snowboard this year - so after 40 years - we may need to change the name of the Camp!
After a quick stop in Bright for lunch and a visit to the oppshop and Lollie shop, Monday afternoon was spent settling into the lodge, collecting and fitting gear in preparation for snowboarding on Mount Hotham. Monday night, we played a group game called 'frustration ball' and the students were briefed on Alpine Safety and the day ahead.
Tuesday, we were up bright and early (6:30am) so that we could make it up the mountain for our morning lesson. After the lesson on Tuesday, we enjoyed a lunch at the General Hotel before heading out in the afternoon to practice new skills in small groups supervised by GSC staff and volunteers. By the end of Day 1, most students had ridden a lift and were gaining confidence in their abilities! Wednesday, Thursday and Friday - involved more lessons and skill development with most students progressing to Blue Runs by Thursday afternoon and by Friday we had some students even boarding on Black runs. Overall, it was an amazing experience and the students displayed enormous resilience dealing with early starts, frequent falls and aching muscles!
A huge thank you to Parent Helper Brett Taylor, Volunteer Jeremy Coyne and Pre-Service Teacher Finn Sparrow for giving up their time to make the camp such a success.
