Prep Report

Well done to all the Preps for completing another term of learning. We wish all the families a safe and relaxing break!

Literacy

In Literacy, students have been learning about the features of non-fiction texts such as; the front cover, contents page, bold words, headings and labels on pictures. They have been reading non-fiction books and learning new facts to write information reports about animals and insects. Students learnt how to activate their prior knowledge before reading, how to summarise information and how to ask questions before, during and after reading. Throughout the term students worked on creating their own information books in writing. Students revised and learnt new Oxford Words with a focus on spelling them accurately in their writing. After revising the letters of the alphabet, they were introduced to the digraphs ‘th’, ‘wh’, ‘ph’, ‘sh’ and ‘ch’. Students celebrated all their reading they have done this year in book week and came dressed as their favourite book characters for the book parade.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, students consolidated their understanding of base 10 (making 10) in place value at the beginning of the term. They revised subitising numbers to 10 to promote automatic recall of numbers. They learnt about number bonds to 10 by making numbers using a range of resources including unifix blocks, partition boards and 10s frames. Students practiced identifying numbers which are one more and one less using numbers lines to support their understanding. Students engaged in weekly challenging maths tasks which promoted problem solving and peer learning. They explored addition and using concrete materials (counters, teddies, unifix blocks, number lines and 10s frames) to support their understanding of how to solve addition problems. Students ended the term learning about length and mass. They practiced comparing and ordering the length and mass of objects. Students learnt new vocabulary such as; ‘longer’, ‘shorter’, ‘heavier’ and ‘lighter’ to describe the length and mass of objects.

SEL

In Social and Emotional Learning, students revised the core emotions in the Mindfull Aus program and learnt about mindful listening, ways to respectfully resolve conflict, empathy, how to express gratitude and developed a growth mindset. Students engaged in activities, class discussions, games, meditation and breathing exercises to practise these skills.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students engaged in our unit ‘Living and Non-Living’. They learnt about what living things need to survive through investigations, experiments (such as making grass heads & a balloon rocket), hands-on experiences and attended the responsible pet ownership incursion.
