Book Week and Literacy Numeracy Week

Book Week and Literacy Numeracy Week were a lot of fun at Pakenham Secondary College. We had stories, quizzes, treasure hunts, book character dress-ups and more. We also had a visiting author. George Ivanoff came and spoke to years seven and eight about the fiction and non-fiction books he has written. He read stories, he talked about the craft of writing and where ideas come from and entertained us all with his You Choose interactive adventures.

Books, literacy, and numeracy form the foundation of education. We haven't forgotten about drama or dance or music, sport, food tech or wood tech or science, philosophy or psychology. The library supports all those subjects and more but everyday in every way literacy and numeracy skills are used in almost every subject and making our way int the world. Telling a story, reading a story, watching a movie or a play unfold are deep human traits and pleasures. We enjoy listening to others stories. We also learn to tell and write our own stories. This is the way we learn about the world we live in. Understanding dates and times, adding up money, calculating the distance, calling that number are all everyday numeracy activities which we take for granted. The more fluent we are in literacy and numeracy, the fuller our lives can be. Book Week and Literacy Numeracy Week are everyday!

The Victorian Premier's Reading Challenge

The Victorian Premier's Reading Challenge was undertaken by all year seven students at PSC. Many books were read, many students gave it a go. 15 students met the challenge of reading 15 books over the last 6 months. We celebrated their achievement with a pizza lunch and a gift of a free book from school supplier, Lamont Books.
