School News

Gippsland Athletics

Windswept and showery was the day that greeted us. 24 students attended, around 12 others qualified but decided not to compete which was a shame. We had two relay teams win – always a highlight for me, as well as about 6 individuals. They get the chance to represent themselves and the school at State Athletics at Lakeside stadium Albert Park in October.

Angus O’Connor is a legend and he did a great job to win the 13 Boys' Shot Put. Congratulations Angus. Ruby Marks possibly surprised herself by qualifying in the 17 Girls' Long Jump. Well done Ruby. Aleasha Read is a dedicated athlete who ran in a very strong 16 Girls' group pulled off a strong win in the 1500m. Nathan Giardina was up against a field of none in the 17 Boys' High Jump and still nearly lost! Good work Nathan, it is rare to win anything just by turning up but it sometimes happens. Charlotte Evans got through in the High Jump and also had a couple of other placings. Apologies if I missed any individuals. We had probably 8 second placings also.

We had 4 relay teams qualify. The 15 Boys had Fletcher Petty as a fill in and he joined Angus Tarrant, Jake Stothart and Cruz Kendall- Jones in the team. They did really well to finish 4th. The 16 Boys had to make 2 changes to the makeshift team they qualified with. Thanks to Matt Moore and Daniel Taylor for joining Bryce Poland and Ollie Mahoney in the team who finished midfield.

The 13 Girls trained really hard and absolutely blew away the rest of the field with a 20 metre win. Well done to Cora-Lynn Munnich, Zoe Briscoe, Beth McDuffie and Charlotte Evans. The 14 Girls were probably second by a decent margin at the last change but thanks to the lead team unfortunately dropping the baton, we led once the dust settled and hung on for a determined win by about a metre from another fast-finishing school.

Year 7 Food Technology News

This week in Cooking the students in Year 7 continued with their assignment of making spaghetti healthier. They got to make their recipe putting their 1-3 vegetables of their choice into the main ingredients. Here is what some of the students said in Year 7.

7A

LOGAN: In Cooking this week we made pasta. In the sauce we added veggies and lots of flavours. It tasted good.

JACK: In Cooking this week we made pasta and we had to add 1-3 vegetables of our choice to make it healthy.  Jobe and I put in carrot and zucchini. It tasted meaty with harder bits of carrot. I couldn’t taste the zucchini which is good because then you don’t know it’s healthy.

SKYE: In Cooking this week we made pasta. We had to simmer the onion then add the sauces and the ingredients. The we drained the pasta and served it up. It was ok, the broccoli was overpowering.

7B

ROSE & LOTTIE: Making spaghetti this week didn’t look right because it looks too watery. The pasta is long. The taste of the spaghetti needs more meat but it is still yum.

MATILDA & CORA-LYNN: Spaghetti is very green as we added spinach and parsley. We had to add vegetables because it’s for our CAT. It was sweet and chewy. It was good.

ELLA & KAYLA: We are making spaghetti bolognaise and we added in Italian herbs and chilli flakes. We added capsicum as our vegetable. Ella doesn’t like it, she says it tastes feral. Kayla thought it was better than expected but it is still horrendous and wouldn’t cook it on a daily basis.

7C

PATTY: We made spaghetti. Cooper was my partner. I learnt how to dice an onion. Capsicum, carrot, and broccoli were our choice of vegetable. It tasted glorious and magnificent.

TILLY: I’ve made spaghetti. I added carrot and zucchini. It was lots of fun to make. It tasted good and yummy.

MILO: We made spaghetti and Aiden was my partner. We have had some major setbacks as we couldn’t get our asparagus and spinach. So, instead we used capsicum and basil. We learnt that we should’ve been a bit more prepared. It tasted a tiny bit spicy but was great.

Year 9 International Cooking - Mexican Fiesta

The Year 9 International Cooking class enjoyed preparing Mexican cuisine, embracing the festive spirit.

¡Buen provecho!
¡Buen provecho!

A range of flavours and textures were experienced through a varied menu including the more familiar Beef Tacos and Burritos with salad and salsa, along with our special Refried Beans recipe and a refreshing Sangria of juice and fizz, but no wine, of course!

MYSTERY BOOK READING CHALLENGE

The library’s Mystery Book Reading Challenge ran throughout the month of August. The aim of this program was to broaden the range of fiction books that students choose to read. Over 130 mystery books were borrowed. It was interesting to observe the reaction of students as they unwrapped their mystery book – sometimes excitement, sometimes disappointment, comments like, “I have seen this book around but never thought I would like it." Students were encouraged to choose a mystery book by being able to collect a raffle ticket with each loan. The winner of the raffle was Jessie Poland who was excited to be able to use her book voucher prize at QDB in Traralgon. Once the raffle ticket rewards finished on August 31st the remaining wrapped mystery books were left on display and they have continued to be borrowed. In Term 4, we will continue with this program selecting 2 genres to promote at a time, starting with Fantasy and Horror.

Year 7 Science

Year 7 Science students have been learning about food webs and ecosystems. They have learnt how everything in an ecosystem is connected and very complex, and what happens when you add or take away different species. A highlight was when students were able to study live snails close up. It was good to see all the students looking after their snails and ensuring they were kept safe during their observations.

Updating Resumes

Attention Year 12’s and those students who are intending on leaving school: Is your Resume up to date? I’d highly recommend having your resume updated and looked over prior to leaving. Come and see Nicole in the Careers Office to arrange an appointment.

Australian Maths Competition

We had a massive number of students, 57 in total, that undertook the Australian Maths competition this year!

It was fantastic to see so many students choose to challenge themselves. Ultimately the results are less important than the experience gained by the students sitting a challenging competition in exam like conditions in the auditorium, where they needed to make strategic choices about which questions they spent their time on.

This experience really helps students when they sit formal exams in the future years. The certificate is held in high regard by future employers as it shows that the student has chosen to go above and beyond the normal school activities and challenge themselves, no matter the result.

As for results we had 13 students gain a Credit certificate and 3 students a Distinction certificate. Which is a very pleasing result for our school. Well done!

A special mention to Clancy Mills who achieved the best result in the school
