Year 9/10 Health Corner

with Adolescent Health Nurse Rosemary Bunge

Sexuality education is important and should start when children are young. Talk about feelings, relationships and values. Primary and secondary school children need age-appropriate information about sex and reproduction. At Mt Beauty Secondary College we are using a resource developed by the DET as part of standard curriculum. This term I have been working with year 9 and 10. Age appropriate sex education is vital for people to make informed, safe, and healthy choices going forward. Knowledge is power.

What we have covered in classes - the reproductive system, menstrual cycle, consent, contraception and STI’s.

Information has been shared in many ways, games, charts, video clips and simple chats.

If you have students in these age groups now is a good time to be talking to them about these things.

Ask your student what they learnt today?

Young people feel encouraged when their parents and carers are open to talking about sexual health. Avoiding the subject won’t stop young people learning about sex, but it may result in them relying on inaccurate information.

The easiest way to talk to your child about sexuality is to start at an early age, though it’s never too late. Answer questions honestly and directly when they come up and find out together what you don’t know as you go along.

If you would like more information about how to talk to your child feel free to contact me via the college.

Thought for the week:

Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.

Year 11 Media

By Year 11 student Emma E

The last 4 weeks the year 11 media students have been completing a task that requires them to create their own version of a music video. Each group of four selected a song: “Dance the night” by Dua Lipa and “I’m still standing” by Elton John. The first, we had to create a story board and have a full plan of what we wanted our videos to look like. Then the second week we had to decide on our costumes and start filming which took a little longer than we anticipated. We then edited together our footage to create our own personal videos.

VCE/ VM/VPC: Big Blue Table

The VCE VM/VPC students are investigating different public awareness campaigns and issues in communities for their Area of Study.   The Big Blue Table is one of the events they are holding.  October is Mental Health Awareness Month, and the students want to raise awareness of mental health issues by supporting Beyond Blue.  A food stall will be held on Monday 9th October with all proceeds going to mental health advocacy.  If you wish to donate please go here.
