Parent & Carer Workshop – Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

At our school, we believe that supporting children to thrive means developing not only academic skills, but also the social and emotional competencies that help them succeed in learning, relationships and life.

As part of our ongoing commitment to Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), we warmly invite you to attend a Parent and Carer Workshop, delivered by a guest speaker from Salutogenic Schools Alliance, focused on understanding and supporting your child’s emotional development and regulation.

MONDAY 1 JUNE - 2:30 TO 3:10 in the School’s Library

Workshop Focus:

Understanding and Supporting Your Child’s Emotional Development and Regulation

This session will explore how children develop the ability to recognise, understand and manage emotions, and how families play a vital role in building these capabilities across childhood.

Through this workshop, we will share:

What Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is and why it matters
How emotional development influences behaviour, relationships and learning
Practical ways to support emotional regulation at home
Strategies for building essential human competencies such as self-awareness, self-management, empathy, resilience, responsible decision-making and positive relationships

At school, we are intentionally teaching students the skills to understand themselves, connect positively with others and respond effectively to challenges. When schools and families work together using common language and approaches, children experience greater consistency and stronger outcomes.

Simple strategies families can begin using at home include:

Name emotions regularly – Help children build emotional vocabulary by naming feelings and talking openly about emotions.
Model calm responses – Children learn regulation through observing trusted adults.
Validate before problem solving – Acknowledge feelings first, then work together on solutions.
Encourage reflection – Ask questions such as, What were you feeling? What helped? What could you try next time?
Create opportunities for independence and responsibility – Build confidence by allowing children to make choices and solve age-appropriate challenges.
Celebrate effort and growth – Focus on progress, persistence and learning rather than perfection.

Reconciliation Week and Sorry Day

This week, we recognise National Reconciliation Week, and on Monday 26 May we also acknowledged National Sorry Day.

On Wednesday, our Junior AECG and Student Leaders proudly represented Edgeworth Public School at the Reconciliation Walk organised by Lake Macquarie City Council. Students demonstrated respect and leadership as they joined schools and community members in recognising the importance of reconciliation.

Earlier in the week, we also held a special assembly where we heard from valued community members and deepened our understanding of National Reconciliation Week and Sorry Day. We would like to sincerely thank Aunty Lacey, Aunty Marie and Kamara Kamara Kelly for sharing their stories, experiences and knowledge with us. We are grateful for your courage, wisdom and willingness to help us learn and grow in understanding as we continue walking alongside and learning from and with each other.

Sorry Day reminds us of the importance of kindness, respect and understanding. As a school community, we can all help create a place where everyone feels safe, included and valued. Let us continue to learn from the past and work together towards a future built on respect, empathy and reconciliation.

We are incredibly proud of the way our students represented EPS across both events, showing respect, empathy and leadership within our wider community.

School Hall Hire

Did you know that our school hall is available for hire outside of school hours, including weekends and after school? Our facilities can be used by community groups, sporting organisations, dance groups, meetings and other approved activities.

All hirers are required to follow the processes and guidelines set by the NSW Department of Education to become an approved community user. This includes completing an application, providing the required documentation and agreeing to the conditions of hire to ensure the safe and respectful use of school facilities.
