Year 5/6 - Casey Community Workshop

On Thursday 28th May, 20 Grade 5/6 students had the exciting opportunity to take part in a community engagement workshop with Mrs Carey and the City of Casey, where their voices will help shape the future of local community centres in Clyde/Clyde North. 

The session encouraged students to think critically about their neighbourhoods and share ideas about what makes a community space welcoming, inclusive, and fun. The interactive workshop introduced students to the purpose of community centres and how they serve people of all ages. Students discussed what they enjoy in their local area, before brainstorming ideas for new activities, facilities, and improvements.

A key focus of the workshop was ensuring that every voice was heard. Students participated in group discussions, a community-mapping activity, and short presentations, building their confidence in expressing opinions and listening to others. It was inspiring to see such thoughtful contributions, with many students considering accessibility, inclusivity, and sustainability in their ideas. 

Key themes included: 

• Spaces to connect with friends
• Spaces for sports and physical activity
• Clean and tidy communities with lots of parks and nature for outdoor fun

The workshop also gave students a valuable insight into how local councils make decisions based on community feedback. Students learned that their ideas and opinions matter, and that they play an important role in shaping their communities.
