Understanding Work Habits

As we prepare to publish our first semester reports, we would like to share more information about the Work Habits section that will accompany student reports.

Work Habits describe the learning behaviours and social expectations that support students to participate successfully at school. These ratings are separate from academic achievement. They help provide families with information about how students approach learning, engage with others and contribute to a safe, respectful and positive classroom environment.

At Balambalam, our Work Habits section focuses on two important areas:

• Effort and Engagement

• Respect and Safety

   

Over recent weeks, staff have been using the Work Habits rubric to build a shared understanding of what each rating looks like in practice. This has supported important conversations about what we might see and hear from students that demonstrates each statement.

For example, staff have discussed what it may look like when a student participates in learning, uses feedback, follows instructions, works safely, or shows care and responsibility in the classroom. These conversations help staff make more consistent judgements across classrooms and year levels.

The Work Habits rubric is designed to give families a clearer picture of how students are developing as learners. It is not about labelling a child, but about identifying the behaviours they are currently demonstrating and the next steps that may support their growth.

When reading your child’s report, we encourage families to look at the Work Habits section alongside the academic achievement information. Together, these provide a broader picture of your child’s learning, progress and development at school.
