CELEBRATING BOOK WEEK - A SYMPHONY OF STORIES!
BY ANITA LITTLE (DISCOVERY CENTRE MANAGER)
What a spectacular Book Week we shared together! It was a week celebrating reading, filled to the end-pages with facts, stories, songs, and creativity.
Inspiring Authors:
We were incredibly pleased to host two phenomenal CBCA award winning Australian authors, Andrea Rowe and Danielle Binks. They shared insights into their professional writing processes and helped students use their everyday experiences as springboards for creativity, empowering our next generation of storytellers to find inspiration all around them.
Tuesday Trivia:
On Tuesday, readers battled it out to see who had the broadest knowledge of books in our epic Book Week Kahoot. Our winners walked away with wonderful new books to add to their collection.
A Symphony of Stories in Song:
The excitement kept building throughout the week! On Thursday, the Primary School Choir treated us to a stunning, book-themed performance. It was the absolute perfect match for this year’s official theme, A Symphony of Stories.
The Grand Finale - Our Friday Parade:
We wrapped up our celebrations on Friday with our Annual Book Week parade. What a fantastic year of costumes from fiction and non-fiction books! The gym was a sea of colour, characters, and pure joy. The effort, imagination, and detail put into the costumes by our students (and staff!) was wonderful.
A huge thankyou to our wonderful school community. To our families for your incredible support behind the scenes with costumes and book buying, to our inspiring guest authors, and to our dedicated staff and students for making this week BOOKTASTIC! Thank you for continuing to champion reading in all its wonderful forms!
HAPPY READING!
YEAR 10 MATHS - FINANCIAL MATHS
BY JENNY SIMMONS (SECONDARY MATHS TEACHER)
Financial Maths was one of the units of work covered earlier this semester in Year 10 General Maths. We considered budgeting and spreadsheets, calculated taxes along with simple and compound interest and also touched on superannuation.
As a follow-up, last week our business manager, Liz Miko, spoke to all the Year 10s about the importance of having good financial skills. She spoke about her background and involvement in running a cafe business along with working here at school for over 20 years.
Students were reminded of the importance of budgeting and how the 50/30/20 rule as a popular budgeting framework can help - 50% for needs, 30% for wants and 20% for savings. Ms Miko demonstrated the magic of compound interest - earning interest on interest - and how this can help to grow your money, particularly if you start saving whilst you are young.
A special thanks to Liz for volunteering to talk to our Year 10s about finances!
