TEACHING & LEARNING

BY CARRIE SCAMPTON (HEAD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING - PRIMARY)

"LEARNING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM"

As we head towards the school holidays, many of us are looking forward to a change of pace. The alarm clocks may be set a little later (or not at all), lunchboxes can take a break, and there will hopefully be opportunities to spend time together as a family.

While the holidays provide a break from the routines of school, they do not mean a break from learning. In fact, some of the richest learning opportunities happen in everyday moments outside the classroom. The Bible reminds us:

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.

Ecclesiastes 3:1

School terms are a season of focused learning, while the upcoming weeks provide a different season with unique opportunities to connect, create, explore and rest.

Everyday Learning Opportunities

Children learn from what we teach them and what they experience alongside us. This type of learning looks like conversations around the dinner table, reading a book together, helping to cook a meal, or playing a board game. It happens when visiting a new place, building something, exploring nature, or simply asking questions about the world. These shared experiences shape our children's understanding of their environment, helping them develop natural curiosity, problem-solving skills, creativity, and confidence.

The Value of Rest

The break is also an important opportunity for rest. We know that children thrive when there is a healthy balance between work and downtime. Time to slow down, spend time with family, enjoy God's creation, and recharge for the term ahead is valuable in itself. As parents, we can often feel pressure to keep children busy or to ensure they are always doing something productive. Sometimes the most valuable moments are the simplest ones.

A Blessing for the Break

My encouragement for this time is to embrace both learning and rest. Laugh, make memories, and continue to nurture your child's growth in ways that extend far beyond the classroom. May these holidays provide opportunities to rest in God's presence, delight in His creation, and continue discovering the many ways He teaches us through the world around us.

Praying all our BHCS families enjoy a safe, restful, and blessed holiday break.
