KLA Feature - PDHPE

This term has been a busy time with our junior students actively engaged in both theory and practical lessons in PDHPE.
Here is what the students have been up to in Term 2 over the past 6 weeks.
Year 7
In theory students have been engaged in a unit titled 'Eat Well, Live Well'. The girls have been investigating diets high in specific nutrients, how these impact the body and sporting performance as well as the influences on our food choices. Focus has also been on developing consumer knowledge and skills relating to understanding nutrition information panels on food labels.
In practical lessons ball games have been central to develop more specialised and manipulative skills.
‘I've been truly engaged in our recent PDHPE lessons, especially how we have been learning about how each nutrient benefits our bodies. I enjoyed our prac in Term 1 lessons and learned the proper techniques of how to long jump and throw a javelin.’ (Gurnoor S)
Year 8
In Year 8, students have been studying ‘We are all in this together’ that encourages students to develop a digital brand and reputation that they can be proud of.
In the practical component, ‘Move and Groove’, students have engaged in lessons that promote the rhythmic and expressive movement of their bodies in a range of activities.
‘This term in PDHPE, we are learning about our digital footprint and how sharing private content can affect our lives in the future. For our prac lessons this term, we have been doing the unit Move and Groove, where we have been experimenting the different ways we can move our bodies. I have enjoyed these lessons because it allows me to connect with my peers and move my body.’ (Anna C)
Year 9
Year 9 students focused on 'Respect me, Respect you’' this term. In theory lessons they are learning about the importance of respectful relationships and how this contributes to a harmonious community.
In practical lessons, some classes finalised their ‘Build A Game’ presentations whilst others commenced ‘Game On’ focussing on a range of sports and activities in a variety of competition formats.
‘The unit for this term in PDHPE is, “Respect me, Respect you”. In this unit, year 9 students have explored the nature of relationships, including what healthy and unhealthy relationships look like, and how they can change over time. Following that, we continued the unit with a “Cafe menu” task, which consists of three parts. The entree task focused on managing challenges to protect yourself and others. The main task was devising a letter about how our school could celebrate Harmony Week. And lastly, the dessert task, explores the topic of ethical behaviour online. This unit is important because it teaches students about safety in challenging situations and being respectful and inclusive of everyone in our community.’ (Mehwash B)
Year 10
Students commenced a new unit ‘1 in 5…MInd Your Health’ that highlights that change is a normal part of life and how one must develop resilience and practise coping skills to manage these changes. Students are expected to understand the importance of a healthy sense of self and identity in approaching life’s challenges. Year 10 have also been incredibly busy in preparing for their End of Semester exams.
Whilst some classes are finishing their Track and Field practical assessment, other classes are engaging in a range of activities that showcase that physical activity can encompass different formats ranging from recreational to competitive sports and games.
‘In PDHPE this term, we’re learning about how to make safe and respectful choices in relationships, including understanding that it’s totally okay to say "no" in any relationship. We're also focusing on mental health and physical wellbeing in “Mind Your Health,” which helps us learn ways to manage stress and stay active. I’m enjoying the open and honest discussions because they’re helping me understand how to take care of myself and make better decisions. What we’re learning is really important because it prepares us for real life situations and helps build confidence and respect, for ourselves and others. (Emmerson B)
