National Reconciliation Week: Bridging Now to Next

This week, from May 27 to June 3, we acknowledge National Reconciliation Week, a time for reflection, learning, and action. The theme for this year, "Bridging Now to Next," encourages us all to build stronger relationships while honouring the past and working towards a better future.

Why Is National Reconciliation Week Important?

This week provides an opportunity for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements. It is a time to reflect on how we can contribute to reconciliation, fostering meaningful connections and valuing the rich histories, cultures, and futures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

The Significance of May 27 – June 3

These dates mark two pivotal moments in Australia's reconciliation journey:

  • May 27, 1967: The successful referendum that allowed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to be formally counted in the census and granted greater rights.

  • June 3, 1992: The landmark High Court Mabo decision, which recognised native title and reshaped Australia's land rights.

Through conversations at home, we invite parents to support their children in embracing this week’s significance. Every effort helps build a more inclusive future for all.

Together, we can take meaningful steps toward reconciliation and create a more connected and respectful community.

The Importance of Daily School Attendance

At POPS, we recognise the vital role regular school attendance plays in a child's success. Students who attend school consistently benefit from better health outcomes, stronger employment opportunities, and higher earnings throughout their lives. Developing good attendance habits early sets the foundation for future success, both academically and in the workforce.

Why Attendance Matters

While occasional absences due to illness are unavoidable, some students may find school challenging and seek to avoid it. In these cases, it is essential to encourage resilience and support them in attending. We are here to assist families in navigating these situations.

Persistent late arrivals also impact student learning, as they miss valuable check-ins, literacy instruction, and intervention programs.

Every Day Counts! When Your Child Attends School Regularly, They:

  • Build strong connections with friends and teachers.
  • Maximise their learning time and academic growth.
  • Develop a full understanding of key topics and concepts.
  • Strengthen resilience by working through challenges.
  • Enhance problem-solving skills essential for success beyond school.

By prioritising daily attendance and punctuality, we help children develop the skills and habits necessary for lifelong success. Thank you for your partnership in supporting student learning!
