Stage 4 PDHPE

Year 7 and 8 have been looking at relationships and the qualities that make positive relationships. This week, the classes used qualities that they think are important to maintain positive relationships as 'ingredients' to create 'relationship hamburgers'.

Show Team Triumphs at the South Coast School Steer Spectacular

The Show Team has returned from the 2025 South Coast School Steer Spectacular with a swag of impressive results and a wealth of experience. The two-day event was a remarkable opportunity for our students to learn new skills, demonstrate their dedication, and represent our school on a significant platform within the agricultural community.

The first day of the event focused on education and preparation. Students took part in a range of workshops, including sessions on cattle parading and junior judging, which were led by industry experts and designed to develop both technical skills and confidence in the show ring. Behind the scenes, the team worked diligently to prepare their cattle, with steers washed, clipped, and groomed to an exceptional standard. A highlight of the day was the Presentation section, where Boorowa Central School students collaborated to develop and deliver a high-quality presentation that showcased their understanding of cattle handling and show preparation. Their teamwork and commitment were rewarded when Sam, Finlay, and Mylee were awarded Gold for the presentation, the only school at the event to achieve so highly.

All students participated in the Junior Judging competition. Amongst a strong field of competitors, Finlay stood out and achieved an outstanding result by placing third in the Intermediate category.

The second day brought the much-anticipated show judging. Kevin, led by Hayden, performed admirably in the ring and was awarded second place overall in the Lightweight category. Cosmo, shown by Mylee, rose to the top in his class and took out first place in the Mediumweight category. The standout of the day was Spike, who, under the skilled leadership of Sam, was awarded first place in the Heavyweight category before being crowned the Overall Grand Champion Steer. This exceptional achievement was the highlight of the day and a proud moment for the entire team.

Parading classes also gave students the chance to demonstrate their ability to handle and present cattle under pressure. All members of the team performed admirably, with Josh advancing to the finals of the Paraders competition after showing confidence and skill in the ring.

The results from this event are a testament to the students’ commitment, teamwork, and the hours of preparation they invested in the lead-up to the competition. Their success highlights the strength of Boorowa Central School’s Show Team and the exciting potential that lies ahead as the team continues to build on these experiences. We are incredibly proud of each student who participated, and we look forward to supporting them in future shows.

Mila - The Nowra show was great, and I had the best time. We went well and got champion overall and gold in presentation. I enjoyed staying at Nowra for 3 days and sleeping in swags.

Casey - The Nowra show was great we had the best time. I enjoyed staying at Nowra for 3 days and we did well so that was the bonus.

BB - The Nowra show was a great experience for us all. We learnt how to prepare for a steer show e.g. washed, blow dried, fed and groomed all 3 steers. We learnt heaps about the industry through work shops throughout the day. Mrs Bromfield’s cooking was also a plus.

Ivy - the Nowra show was a great experience and opportunity. I had the best time with all the workshops and learnt heaps.

Carcass Results

Our great results at the show have continued with Spike winning Grand Champion Carcass with a score of 91.5 points out of 100 and Kevin winning Reserve Champion Carcass scoring 91 points. This meant that we won the overall Manildra Champion School of the Competition. This was awarded to the school with the highest aggregate score across all categories which included live judging, carcass judging, report presentation and herdsman. This highlights the outstanding achievement of the team at the competition and demonstrates how far they have come since first entering competitions at the beginning of last year.

Year 7 Technology Mandatory

As part of the Wonders of Wool Unit students created their own piece of felt, designed a creature, followed a template, cut the felt out and stitched the creatures together. Some students appliqued additional pieces to add their own design elements. Most students mastered a running, whip and blanket stitch. The class will now move onto making the aprons which will include a fabric pizza shape of their own choice.

Stage 5 Food Technology

Students have continued to learn about nutrients and nutrition. As part of the unit of work students have prepared a series of healthy food options including a lime and coconut curry, beef stir fry and chicken san choy bow. Students completed an in depth study of one nutrient and analysed recipes suitability for adolescents as part of their assessment task. All students have continued to develop their skills and knowledge of food preparation techniques and are consistently making quality food products which was evident in their half yearly practical exam.

Year 11 Hospitality

Hospitality students are continuing to learn about Food safety and Hygiene. As part of the learning sequence students are required to make a variety of sandwiches which include open, pressed and filled whilst using a variety of breads including wraps, focaccia and commercial breads. Thus far the class has made an open steak sandwich, bruschetta and pressed focaccia. The class must be commended on their professionalism and the quality of food and service which they provided for ANZAC day. Students served coffee, scones, sandwiches and ANZAC slices for the school's visitors. To continue to build their skills set and ability to interact with customers hospitality students will be going out to work placement in week 9 of this term.
