Infants and Primary

INFANTS

Our Infants classes have had a productive and busy start to Term 2 with lots of things happening around the school, many of which are highlighted in this newsletter. Please keep a close eye out on Compass and Facebook for upcoming events and reach out to class teachers if you have any questions.

Kindergarten 2026 Transition Activities: Our Infants and Primary students and staff enjoyed welcoming prospective Kindergarten 2026 students and their families to our school on Tuesday for a ‘Play and Stay’. They spent some time playing and looking around our Kindergarten/Year 1 classroom and climbing on our new playground equipment and enjoying the Library space. K/1 students also had a great morning with friends from the BEE Centre who joined us for a ‘Teddy Bear’s Picnic’ on Tuesday. This was a great chance for our prospective students to become more familiar with the people and places of ‘Big School’. We will be hosting another Teddy Bear’s Picnic with some more friends from the BEE Centre next Wednesday. During all of these activities, our school leaders have been fantastic role models and helpers and have really showcased the great students we have here at Boorowa Central School – thanks to them all!

Kindy/Year 1

Our K/1 students have enjoyed learning facts about insects, bug and all things creepy crawly this past fortnight. We have been learning the difference between fact and fiction and discovered that some books have a bit of both in them, such as Eric Carle’s ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. We will continue this next week and take part in a ‘Bug Hunt’ in our playground, and are hoping to discover and uncover small animals in all sorts of different locations. We are building are reading and writing skills and are looking to make our own ‘Big Book of Bugs’ to share in the Library.

In Mathematics, students in K/1 have been counting, counting and counting. We are identifying patterns in our counting and discovering ways we can help to keep track our counting as we reach bigger and bigger numbers. We have also been focusing on ‘equivalence’ and are learning that there are so many ways that numbers and things can be equivalent, such as 6 can be made from 5 and 1, 4 and 2, 6 and 0, 3 and 3, etc.

Last week our Kindergarten students visited the BEE Centre to take part in their ‘Do it for Dolly’ activities. They had a great time enjoying being together with BEE Centre friends and building connections while taking part in fun activities that promoted communication. A big thank you to the BEE Centre for inviting us to be a part of this.

Yindy

The first three weeks of Term 2 have been full of energy and excitement for our Yindy students. They've embraced the new sandpits with great enthusiasm, spending time each day exploring the texture of the cool sand beneath their hands and feet—an experience that brings both joy and sensory engagement.

On Monday, May 5th, the Yindy class had the opportunity to join the high school MC class for a special trip to Bathurst to participate in an Inclusive Tennis Day. It was a fantastic experience where students learned new tennis skills and drills in a supportive and inclusive environment. The day was not only educational but also a lot of fun, with students thoroughly enjoying every moment.

Mrs Rose McGrath

 Year 1/2

Welcome back for term 2! Students have had a busy beginning to the term, with an ANZAC Day Ceremony, School photos, Mother’s Day activities, Cross Country and assessments as teachers begin writing reports.

Our class has some avid runners, with students turning 8 this year competing in their first Cross Country. Students under 8 were given the opportunity to engage in a shorter run alongside the rest of the school before they sat down to cheer on older peers. It was wonderful to see great sportsmanship coming through in our young age groups and a positive attitude towards giving something challenging a go.

In English this term, students have been exploring representation in texts, considering the choices authors and illustrators make in the development of their texts. Students have been challenged this week to create a whole- class text that is similar to the text ‘Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley’ by Aaron Blabey. Learning outcomes were developed as a whole class after considering the literary devices that we have been focusing on throughout the unit. They include incorporating complex sentences with a conjunction, adding verbs and enhancing written work with an illustration. Students have developed confidence in refining their own work this year, checking back to the learning outcomes and editing their work.

In Mathematics, students began the term exploring a range of 2D shapes. We experimented with folding and cutting shapes to find smaller shapes inside. This unit extended to considering reflections and translations in patterns- students very much enjoyed using small mirrors to determine what the reflection of a shape would look like. We also explored the concept of symmetry, recognising when objects, both man- made and natural, have symmetry within them.

In the coming weeks, Year 1/ 2 will be going on an excursion to walk around the Boorowa River as we have been learning about local Indigenous history. The Boorowa River was a traditional gathering and teaching place for the Wiradjuri people, who lived in the Boorowa region long before European settlement. The river provided food, water, and shelter and likely formed part of significant Songlines. Students will be invited to learn through place and exploration during this excursion as we delve deeper into the History unit. Keep an eye out on compass for further information regarding this walking excursion (during school hours).

Year 2/3

Year 2/3 have had a great start to term 2, we started off with learning about Anzac Day and we attended the school Anzac ceremony. The next day we had cooking and made some yummy Anzac biscuits. We love getting our hands dirty to make yummy treats. We have made Mother's Day cards during our Art lessons and in Music, we are learning about musical instruments from different countries. In English, we have been reading a novel named 'Wandi'. We are learning about persuasive texts and will be writing speeches and creating posters to show off our persuasive writing skills. In Maths, we are learning to collect, collate, present and interpret data. This has been a lot of fun learning different things about each other. In PDHPE, we have been talking about respect and being inclusive of others. We all enjoyed running the cross country and Year 3 had a great day at the Soccer gala day in Young on Friday.

We are very excited for a great term of learning in primary this term and are looking forward to all of the events on this term.

Year 5/6

5/6 has indeed had a busy start to the term, engaging in a variety of learning experiences and sports activities. One of the major highlights has been their preparation for the upcoming market day, where they are excited to see their business stalls come to life on Thursday, May 22nd.

In Week 1, the students had the opportunity to propose their business ideas to Mr. Jones. They worked collaboratively in teams to create PowerPoint presentations that detailed their business concepts. This process required them to not only develop their ideas but also enhance their public speaking skills, as they presented on several key components of their businesses, including:

  • Business Overview: Describing what their business is and what products or services they will offer.
  • Marketing Strategies: Explaining how they plan to attract customers and promote their stalls.
  • Finance Strategies: Outlining their budget, pricing, and how they plan to manage their finances during the market day.
  • Target Audience: Identifying who their potential customers are and how they will appeal to them.

Mr. Jones provided valuable feedback on their presentations, which the students are now using to make final adjustments and improvements—referred to as their "finishing touches"—to ensure their businesses are ready for the market day.
