Assistant Principals' Report

Education Week
Education Week is next week! This year’s theme, “Celebration of Cultures,” highlights the rich diversity within our communities and the importance of creating a safe and welcoming environment for every child.
We will be hosting an Open Morning on Wednesday, 21st May 2025. From 8:45am to 9:45am, Primary Years families are invited to visit classrooms and participate in an engaging Literacy or Numeracy session. Specialist classes will also run during this time.
Following the open morning, we invite all Primary Years families to join us for morning tea. Morning tea will be in the PY Learning Lab (previously the PY library). At the morning tea will offically open this new space and there will be a performance from our choir and Year 1C . Please enter the Learning Lab through the Prep playground.
Curriculum Day - Friday 23rd May 2025
Friday 23rd May (Week 5) is a Curriculum Day (student free day). On this day our Primary Years staff will be learning about Professional Learning Communities (PLC) and how we can work collaboratively to examine student learning and plan together to best meet the needs of our student's learning and wellbeing. Through this focus on PLC we will also be learning about evidence-based practices in reading.
School Saving Bonus reminder and allocation to school activities
The Victorian Government is delivering the School Saving Bonus (SSB) – a one-off support of $400 for eligible government school students from Prep to Year 12 in 2025. The SSB can be used for uniforms and textbooks until Monday, 30 June 2025. Any funds remaining after 30 June 2025, including online voucher amounts that have not been redeemed, will become a credit to use on school activities.
However, the credit will not be available on your family account at our school until late July. To use any remaining SSB funds to cover the cost of school activities in July, please refer to the SSB online system and allocate the funds to school activities before 30 June 2025. To learn more about the SSB online system, download the step-by-step System guide for parents and carers or watch this School Saving Bonus video. System guide translations are also available in 14 languages.
The Department of Education’s SSB contact centre will remain available until 30 June 2025. The contact centre can be reached by:
- completing the School Saving Bonus enquiry form
- calling 1800 338 663, between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm on weekdays
KIDS FIRST PARENT SESSION
We are pleased to share that Hazel Glen College has partnered with Kids First Australia to support the wellbeing and safety of our students and school community. Kids First Australia is a proudly independent national child, youth and family services provider and early education specialist. Their vision is for all children and young people to thrive in resilient, strong, and safe families and communities. Kids First is an evidence-based organisation who partners with universities to measure and evaluate their programs.
Term 3 Student Sessions
In Term 3, students from Year 2 to Year 6 will have the opportunity to participate in Kids First sessions focused on personal safety. These sessions aim to equip students with the knowledge and skills to recognise and respond to unsafe situations in an age-appropriate and empowering way. A Compass event will be released later in the Term for consent and payment.
Parent Information Session
As part of this partnership, Kids First will be delivering a Parent Information Session on Tuesday 3rd June (Week 7) from 5:30pm to 7:00pm. This session will be held at the College in the Performing Arts Centre (PAC).
The session will explore protective behaviours education and how parents can support this at home with your children. It will also cover online safety, including measures and strategies you can implement to help protect your child when using the internet at home. Kids First trainers will also discuss the program in which our Year 2–6 students will participate during Term 3. All Primary Years parents are welcome to attend this session.
If you are interested in attending, please complete the TryBooking registration as soon as possible to secure your place.
