Level 5 & 6 Wonga Weekly

Week 4, Term 2

🗓️ TERM 2 DATES

🌱 May 19th: Curriculum Day

🌱May 19th - 23rd: Grade 6 Gelantipy Camp

🌱 May 26th - 30th: Grade 5 Gelantipy Camp

🌱 LITERACY - Reading

Grade 5 and 6 students have been analysing picture storybooks to identify structure, themes, purpose and use of illustration for impact. These stories related directly to our CBL theme of Diversity.

The picture storybooks we explored included:

🌱My Two Blankets - Irena Kobald

🌱The Proudest Blue - Ibtihaj Muhammad and S.K. Ali

🌱The Day War Came -  Nicola Davies

🌱The Other Side - Jacqueline Woodson

This week, students will continue analysing our new mentor text Waves by Donna Rawlins, Heather Potter and Mark Jackson. This picture storybook is a collection of short stories exploring the themes of migration, war and hardship. The text explores personal stories from as early as 5000 years before present, until the early 2000s.

What you can do at home

Ask your child to share what they have read in the picture storybooks during the week. Encourage them to read texts of their own interests daily and discuss what they’re reading and why.

Writing

Grade 5 and 6 students have been analysing information report structure in preparation to create an information report on a country of their choice. This week, students will complete their information reports about their chosen country.

🌱 NUMERACY

Our Grade 5 students are developing their spatial and geometric reasoning by exploring 3D objects and their nets. They'll be connecting real-world objects to their corresponding nets and even constructing 3D shapes from them. They’re also learning how to create and use a grid coordinate system to describe positions and movements using coordinates and directional language.

Our Grade 6 students are diving deeper into geometry by examining parallel cross-sections of 3D objects and exploring how these relate to right prisms. They’re also working with all four quadrants of the Cartesian plane — learning how to locate points, describe movement, and understand how coordinates change when points shift positions.

It's  a hands-on and engaging way to explore the world of shapes, space, and position!

What you can do at home

Along with the weekly 'Mathletics' tasks assigned for homework, students are encouraged to go to the 'My Numeracy' section of Essential Assessment to reinforce the skills and areas taught at school.

To further support this learning at home, encourage your child to notice and describe 3D shapes and their features in everyday objects, like packaging or building blocks. You can also play simple grid or mapping games together to practise using coordinates and directional language in fun, practical ways.

🌱 CBL

This term our Big Idea is Diversity, specifically focusing on cultural diversity. Grade 5 and 6 students will explore multicultural Australia, the waves of migration and how this has shaped our country.

Essential Question:

How does cultural diversity shape our identity and sense of belonging?

Guiding Questions:

- What does cultural diversity mean to us?

- How has living in a culturally diverse society enriched our lives?

- What challenges can people face in a culturally diverse society?

- How can we inspire people to value cultural diversity?

Students will be introduced to our Big Idea of Diversity through our proposal video, and begin compiling their wonderings about Diversity.

🌱 HOMEWORK

As communicated towards the end of Term One, students are now expected to complete homework on a weekly basis.

This consists of

- 100 minutes total of reading a novel/factual text of their choice

- 3 (minimum) Mathletics tasks, which the teachers will assign

- 2 Nessy activities

This homework is to be recorded in the Calendar App on student iPads.

 🌿 REMINDERS

🌱Grade 6 High School Transition forms are due by Friday May 9th.

🌱Hats are no longer required between May 1st and September 1st. Please ask your child to bring these home so they can be washed.

🌱 Please assist your child in ensuring that their iPad comes to school every day, fully charged.

🌱 Please ensure you have provided permission for your child to attend camp, or alternatively, contacted the Office to let us know that your child will not be participating.

DROP OFF AND PICK UP IN LANTANA

Please be mindful of the road signs on Lantana Road. It is a NO PARKING zone in front of the school during school start and finish times. To ensure a smooth and safe process, we have a designated pick-up system at the end of the day, where a teacher monitors and guides students into cars lined up in the queue. This system works efficiently when there are no parked cars breaching the signage during these times. Thank you for your cooperation.
