Week 4, Term 2
🌱 LITERACY
This week in Reading, students will continue engaging with our mentor text Storm Boy. We’ll be introducing the comprehension strategy of identifying the main idea, using extracts from Chapters 1 and 2 to explore what each chapter is mostly about. Students will practise finding key details that support the main idea. We will also begin developing the skill of retelling, encouraging students to summarise what they have read in their own words.
This week in Writing, students will continue working on the genre of information reports. Our focus will be on learning how to paraphrase effectively when taking notes, using both video and written sources to practise this skill. We’ll also make meaningful links to The Coorong, the setting from our mentor text Storm Boy, to help students gather and organise information for their reports.
This week, parents can support their child’s reading by asking them to explain the main idea of a chapter or retell a part of Storm Boy in their own words. In writing, you can help by encouraging your child to take short notes from a nature documentary or article, then practise putting the information into their own words.
🌱 NUMERACY
This week in Numeracy, we will continue our unit focused on addition. Students will explore a variety of strategies to strengthen their accuracy and confidence when solving number problems. We’ll be looking closely at rounding and estimating, breaking numbers apart (partitioning), using number lines, and trying the compensation strategy. These methods encourage flexible thinking and support a stronger understanding of number relationships.
You can support your child at home by asking them to describe the strategy they used to solve an addition problem. Incorporating quick mental maths into everyday tasks, like adding prices while shopping or measuring ingredients when cooking, is a fun way to build number skills.
🌱 CBL
We will continue to unpack our Term Two Big Idea 'Diversity'. As we explore the guiding question 'what is cultural diversity' and essential question, 'How does diversity enrich our lives?', we are going to ask students to consider their own family background. They will be asked to create a Keynote presentation on their iPad with information from their family history including country/ies of origin, languages spoken, traditions, music and beliefs.
If possible, we would love for you to take a few minutes to discuss some of these details with them.
At home, you can support your child by helping them learn about your family history, to assist them in being prepared for our Keynote presentation.
Wellbeing
This week in Wellbeing, students will learn about the importance of showing integrity in their online behaviour as part of our Cyber Safety session. We’ll talk about how to use digital platforms in respectful, honest, and responsible ways. In our Respectful Relationships program, we’ll focus on recognising and appreciating diversity, and why it’s important to include people from all cultural backgrounds.
🌿 REMINDERS
🌱 Please assist your child in ensuring that their iPad comes to school every day, fully charged.
🌱 Check that your child has headphones which work and connect to their iPad.
DROP OFF AND PICK UP IN LANTANA
Please be mindful of the road signs on Lantana Road. It is a NO PARKING zone in front of the school, during school start and finish times. To ensure a smooth and safe process, we have a designated pick-up system at the end of the day where a teacher monitors and guides students into cars lined up in the queue. This system works efficiently when there are no parked cars breaching the signage during these times. Thank you for your cooperation.
