Student Leadership

Dear Saltwater Families,

Student Leaders are working hard to build a community of belonging at Saltwater College. We are excited to share some exciting news regarding out Buddies.

Buddies 2025

Term 2 has begun with joy and excitement in the Prep cohort as we continue to strengthen our relationships with our Year 6 buddies. This week we will share insights of the visits between 6I and Prep I (Ms Edie and Miss Pietrapertosa) which has been full of fun and laughter. During our first encounter, Prep I made the journey upstairs to the 6I classroom to meet our new friends for the first time. The preps were full of excitement and nerves to meet their Year 6 buddies, however once meeting their newfound friend the nerves went away. During this meeting relationships were formed through games, drawings, sharing stories and having a laugh together.

During our second meeting the Year 6 buddies were just as excited as the prep students. Prep I came ready to the 6I classroom to gain support to complete the front cover on their Mother’s Day card along with the support of Ms Rebecca, Ms Edie, Miss Pietrapertosa and the excitement to meet Ms Kilner. The teams worked cooperatively and diligently together.

Our third meeting was met with an explosive amount of excitement as we joined together in the gym to play some class games. The buddies joined together to play fruit salad, Miss P says and a Prep I created game called ‘she likes to, he likes to’ based off our special sentence from Week 3 this term. Fruit salad each student is assigned a fruit and runs where their fruit is called, Miss P says is an adaptation of Simon says and our Prep I game the students do the movement that matches if they are a she or he.

6I and Prep I are looking forward to furthering and strengthening their relationships throughout the remainder of the year.

Junior School Council Meeting

Last Friday, the 9th of May, during our Junior School Council meeting, we discussed the Attitude to School Survey. Each year level from 4-6 had different sheets, and on each sheet, there was a pie graph showing how many Saltwater College students agreed or disagreed with certain questions. For example, one of the questions we discussed was, ‘I know how to calm myself down,’ and 63.9% of Saltwater students agreed that they know how to calm themselves down.

Additionally, we talked about the negative impact. For example, 21.3% of Saltwater students disagreed that their teacher makes work interesting. We discussed strategies to make the work more interesting. One idea was for the teachers to include educational games in students’ learning. Then, to wrap up our meeting, we shared one example from each year level.
