Year Six

Dear Year Six Community,

As we wrap up Week Four, it’s clear that our Year Six students are well and truly thick in the middle of their learning journey this term! The energy in the classroom is focused and purposeful, with students showing fantastic commitment to their goals and rising to the challenges of the curriculum.

Literacy

Within literacy, students have been reading and identifying text features, whilst in writing, they use these skills within their own narratives.

In Writing, students have been crafting detailed historical narratives, carefully building rich character profiles and vivid setting descriptions. It’s been a joy to read their work and see how they have combined their knowledge of the past with creative flair and thoughtful structure.

In reading, we have been delving deeper into a range of historical narratives including that of Anne Frank and Adolf Hitler to further understand the importance of character development and story structure.

Mathematics

In Maths, we are continuing our learning in Measurement. Students have been exploring area and perimeter, and are now beginning to investigate volume and capacity. They’re applying their knowledge to solve real-world problems and developing a strong understanding of how measurement is used in everyday contexts.

Unit of Inquiry

As we continue our learning about, 'Historical events which have shaped the way Australia looks today', the students have had the opportunity to delve deeply into important historical events including, Colonisation and important First Nations Australian events, Australian Gold Rush and now World War II. Through this investigation, students are not only learning about the events, but also different perspectives of different individuals that were present during the events. These tasks have helped to further develop the students' caring, open-minded and perspective learner profile skills.

Winter Sports

Winter sports have now been finalised. Well done to everyone for participating in the try outs and congratulations to those who made the teams.

Training for those sports will be on Thursday mornings.

Sovereign Hill

On Friday the 16th May, the Year Six students attended Sovereign Hill in Ballarat. This is closely linked to our current Unit of Inquiry. The students were able to explore what it was like to be a gold miner in the 1850's by participating in gold panning, exploring the mines and observing how miners lived in tents or houses without electricity. The students really enjoyed the hands on experience to consolidate their learning.
