Year Two

Dear Year Two Families

This has been another busy week in Year Two! With some of our students finishing up swimming last week the second group has begun their swimming classes this week. Students have been enthusiastic and principled in their representation of the school, and it has been wonderful to watch them enjoy this extracurricular activity!

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students have been working on their research and collaboration skills. They have been working in groups to begin a project that they will work on over the next few weeks. This inquiry unit is based around the central idea ‘Our actions impact the way our bodies work’ with students inquiring into what our body systems are, how they work and how our lifestyle choices impact our health and survival. Students are looking forward to presenting their project and findings in week seven.

Writing

In Writing, students are learning how to reflect upon their work to identify what they are proud of.  They are learning to recognise and identify their own personal growth and what they have achieved in their writing throughout the term. They are working on setting goals for themselves in their writing moving forward. We have also continued with our author study of Stephen Michael King with students working on a read and retell. The students were provided with pictures from the text and asked to write a sentence to explain what happened during this part of the text.  Students were asked to focus on verbs throughout this lesson as moving into the next few weeks students will be learning about verbs in depth.

Spelling

Students have been busy this week learning all about nouns. Students have worked through the Oxford Word lists together with their teacher and peers to identify common nouns. Students have discussed that a noun is a person, place or thing and have spent time sorting words into these categories.  They have also learnt about proper nouns. The names of people and places, that require a capital letter. Students have worked to identify nouns within their reading books and mentor texts.

Reading

In Reading, we have been continuing our author study on Stephen Michael King. Students have read a wide variety of his books this week and made connections between these texts. Students are learning to ask questions about the texts as they read to help deepen their comprehension. Student have been focusing on character development throughout the text and how the books illustrations can help to complement the text.

Maths

In Maths, this week there has been a strong focus on addition. Students spent time exploring different addition strategies such as ‘part, part whole’ ‘doubles’ and ‘near doubles’ They used their acquired knowledge of these strategies to help them solve addition problems. Students used hands on materials to represent their thinking. Students were also presented with addition problems based around our recent unit on money to help consolidate their understanding.  They worked to breakdown worded problems around prices of groceries and simplified the question into an addition problem to complete.

Swimming Program

This week 2C, 2D, 2G, 2H and 2J have engaged in the Grade 2 Swimming Program at the Saltwater Swim school. Students have demonstrated their commitment to our school values by being prepared, using their best manners in public and trying their best. Well done to all the students participating in swimming this week. Just a quick reminder, next week is the last week for the Grade 2 Swimming Program. We hope to see all students continuing to demonstrate the wonderful values of Saltwater P-9 College.
