Year One

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It has been a wonderful and productive term in Year One, filled with exciting learning experiences across all areas of the curriculum. We’re proud to share with you what your child has been exploring in the classroom.

Reading

In Reading, our focus has been on making text-to-text connections. The students read the thought-provoking book Hey Little Ant, which sparked meaningful discussions about perspective and standing up for what you believe is right. The children were encouraged

to connect this story with other texts they’ve read, noticing common themes such as kindness, fairness and understanding others’ feelings. These conversations have supported their comprehension and helped deepen their thinking as readers.

Writing

In Writing, the students have been working hard to recount personal experiences using simple sentences. They practised organising their ideas with time connectives such as "first," "next," "then," and "finally." Students were encouraged to include nouns, verbs, and adjectives to bring their writing to life. We heard some fantastic personal recounts about visits to the park, family outings, and weekend adventures. It’s been wonderful to see their confidence grow as young writers!

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we explored different strategies for addition. The students learnt how to double numbers, count collections using hands-on materials such as counters and blocks, and solve vertical addition problems. Through games, group work and guided practice, they built their understanding of how numbers work together. It was great to see the children so engaged and enthusiastic, especially when they discovered how useful doubling can be in everyday maths.

Inquiry

This term in Inquiry, we’ve been learning about understanding empathy and how to resolve conflict. The students have listened to stories and drew pictures as a creative outlet to describe how they feel in different situations. Using colour, shapes, and facial expressions, they created beautiful artworks that showed emotions such as happiness, sadness, surprise and calm. These artworks sparked great conversations and helped students recognise and name their own emotions.

Homework

In Homework these past two weeks, Year One has focused on the areas of Inquiry and Writing. In our Unit of Inquiry we have been looking into the relationships we have in our lives. Student’s were asked to create a family tree to understand the people who help affect our lives the most. In writing, we have been focusing on Recount writing to focus on recalling past events. Student’s have been using their 5 W’s (who, what, when, where and why) to add more detail to their writing.
