Grade 4

English

This term, students will begin a Humanities unit exploring Celebrations of Different Cultures, with a focus on Australia's journey to federation. They will investigate how Australia’s past influenced the push for federation, examine the key events and people involved in developing the Constitution, and learn about the structure of our government today. Students will also explore how the Constitution can be changed and why these changes are important.

In English, students will focus on improving sentence structure by combining two to three short sentences using pronouns and conjunctions as cohesive devices. This work will help students write more fluently and clearly by linking ideas effectively.

Mathematics

In Term 3, students will deepen their understanding of addition and subtraction. They will explore the commutative property of addition, recognising that the order of numbers does not affect the total. Through a rich task focused on the question “How can we add and subtract?”, students will investigate different strategies for solving number problems.

They will also work with equivalent addition and subtraction number sentences, learning to identify and create number sentences that have the same value. A key focus will be on determining equivalence, helping students build flexibility and confidence in their number sense.
