Explore the Learning in Prep

English

The Preps will begin a new Core Knowledge unit, ‘First Nations Australians.’ Students will explore important First Nations places and landmarks, the origins of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flags and First Nations storytelling through art and paintings. The students will practice constructing sentences that include 'when,' 'who,' 'what,' and 'where.'

The students will also be focusing on the new sounds ‘ck’, 'th' (voiced) 'th' (unvoiced) and 'wh' through explicit phonics, handwriting and reading fluency instruction. The Preps will be learning the new high frequency words: I'm, have, be, like, were, so, go, no.  In Week 2, we will be sending home a list of all taught high frequency words from Semester 1, which you are welcome to revise with the students as part of their home-reading. At the end of each Phonics Plus set (every three weeks), we will send home another list of the new

 words taught in that set.

In Week 2, we will also give students a 'Foundation at Home Reading' resource in place of a decodable text in their book pouches, where they can practice taught sounds, words and high frequency words. This is so that home reading continues to align with newly taught sounds. In Term 4, students will return to using decodable texts as take-home readers.

Mathematics

Students will learn to make and say 2 digit numbers, using bundling sticks of tens and ones. Students will also learn to add 2, by counting on and drawing lines to represent addition sums.

Inquiry

Students will learn about the First Nations people whose land our school is on and draw pictures of the land, sea, sky, plants and animals near our school. They will also learn about places that are sacred to First Nations people and draw a place that is special to them. The Preps will explore drawing and colouring the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags and traditional Aboriginal artwork.

This term, we will also be focusing on the history of Barwon Heads as we celebrate 150 years of Barwon Heads Primary School. In Week 1 and 2, we will be exploring the questions:

  • What is history? Why is 150 years important to BHPS?
  • How has Barwon Heads changed over time?
  • What did the town look like when it was first established?
