Year Three - Spotlight on Learning
Ephesus Community
Dear Families,
We hope you were able to commemorate ANZAC day last week in some way and also enjoy the extra day with family and friends. This week has been the second week into Term 2 and our routines are well and truly in place. we look forward to a term of great learning, being respectful towards others, ourselves and equipment and being physically and emotionally safe.
Take care and God bless,
Year Three Ephesus Team
This week in our learning...
Maths
We are continuing our work on fractions, focusing on recognising and representing unit fractions as equal parts of a whole using shapes, groups, and numbers. We are exploring fractions of a collection — halves, thirds, quarters, fifths, and tenths — and solving problems by showing our understanding visually, using mathematical language, and writing the correct symbols.
English
We have started our new novel “Yirra and her Deadly Dog Demon”. We have been introduced to some Indigenous words like ‘deadly’ meaning awesome and ‘mob’ meaning family/community group. We have found out that there are roughly 500 different Australian Aboriginal groups, each with their own languages and territories. We will be starting to investigate and write a factual recount title ‘The History of the Australian Aboriginal Flag’.
Religious Education
During May, we honor the Month of Mary. It is a wonderful opportunity for the students to deepen their understanding of kindness, compassion, and devotion, following Mary's example in their own lives.
We are learning to talk about how the people in parables acted, and how that made others feel and to reflect on how certain stories from the Bible help us follow Jesus on our faith journey.
Integrated Studies
Our English and our Integrated studies are closely related- learning about Australian Indigenous cultures. We are examining how Indigenous peoples are connected to land, water, and sky, why Country is important to Aboriginal people, and about the significance of Dreamtime stories.
AUSLAN
We can use our whole body to add layers of meaning to signs. To show the opposite of a sign we can shake our head as we sign it. Specifically we have been focusing on the signs Hello, Goodbye, Thank you, Welcome, You're welcome, Good, Cross your legs, Sit down, Recess, Look at me, Listen and Come.
Social/Emotional Learning & RRRR
Students can describe some things that make them angry and suggest and practice ways to self-calm.
