Year One - Spotlight on Learning

Jerusalem Community

 Dear Families,

It's been a busy week of learning and preparation in the Jerusalem community. Last week we commemorated ANZAC day by participating in a prayer service and learning about the significance of ANZAC day. This was a great opportunity for us to start learning about our Inquiry question 'How does the past shape who we are?'

Religious Education focus: We have many concepts on focus for RE. We began the week with a pre-assessment about the topic 'Mary Mother of Jesus' and moved on to how Religion connects to the main Inquiry question.

English focus:This week we have focused on words that have '_y' to make the long vowel 'i' sound. Here are some words that can be reinforced at home.

Mathematics focus: We learned about how to effectively count a collection of over 100 objects. Over the week we counted collections in different ways to identify strategies to group them to make counting easier.

SEL: . This week we started looking at the specific words in the feelings continuum and what scenarios might cause these feelings. We encourage you to use these words at home with your children, when they are experiencing these emotions. At home parents can also use these words to describe how you are feeling. i.e " I am overwhelmed because I have so much to do...." "I am feeling good because you have helped me to clean the house".

History:  This term we will focus on the book 'My Place' by Nadia Wheatly, to learn about Australian History and Indigenous culture. This week we read about Laura's story from 1988.

AUSLAN: This week we have learned these signs.

Next week we are learning about...

Religious Education focus: Jerusalem will again organise Holy Mass on Wednesday the 7th of May at 9.30am. Family members are cordially invited to attend.  We will also prepare for a very special celebration of all our mothers and mother figures. (It's a surprise!)

English focus: Next week we will be looking at 'Walk with us' by Adam Goods.

Mathematics focus: Students will continue to expand their knowledge on Counting and Place Value.

SEL: Students will be learning about specific vocabulary relating to our morning check-in routine.

History: We will continue to work with on our Inquiry question based on the book 'My place'.

AUSLAN Focus: Students will be learning the following signs:
