Year Five - Spotlight on Learning

Bethany Community

Dear Bethany Families,

This week, our students have continued to demonstrate our core school expectations of Safety, Respect, and Learning. These values were clearly on display during our first community assembly of the term, where students came together positively and responsibly to celebrate the start of a new term. As part of the assembly, we watched a social story about the upcoming Creative Sports activity at St Peter’s next week. Our students learned about what to expect and what they’ll be doing, with Year 9 students having designed and created a range of fun games for our Year 5s to enjoy and take part in.

Next Week we are learning about...

Religious Education Focus:

We will be learning about Mary's role in the Catholic faith and how her role helped bring about great change in the world. The students will look at the scripture of 'The wedding at Cana' and identify Mary’s role in the event.

English Focus

We will begin our second novel study of the term 'Dirrarn', the sequel to Black Cockatoo by Carl Merrison and Hakea Hustler. It continues the story of Mia and explores themes of resilience, culture, and the importance of standing up for what is right. For writing, students will plan, write and edit an introduction and a body paragraph for a factual recount.

Mathematics Focus

In week 3, students will begin to learn about decimals, with a specific focus on thousandths. They will be learning to write thousandths in decimal form, as well as placing and ordering them on a number line, using numbers both less than and greater than one.

Auslan Focus

Next week’s focus is distinguishing between open-ended questions and statements by understanding that this is shown through downward eyebrow movements.

Social/ Emotional Learning Focus

Next week, students will continue to focus on positive self-talk, exploring how it can support them in challenging situations and help them develop effective personal coping strategies.
