Year 5/6

Mathematics
Over the past two weeks in Mathematics, students have been learning about measurement, time and number concepts, with a focus on real-life applications.
In length and distance, students explored metres and kilometres, learning that 1 kilometre equals 1,000 metres. They practised measuring, estimating and recording distances using appropriate units and tools. Students also investigated perimeter, calculating the distance around shapes and exploring efficient strategies for larger areas. Students worked on converting units of length, using their understanding of place value to compare and convert between metres and kilometres.
In time, students focused on reading and converting 24-hour time, particularly through real-life examples such as bus timetables. They solved a variety of practical questions, helping them understand how 24-hour time is used in everyday situations to avoid confusion.
In number, students extended their understanding of decimals to thousandths and strengthened their addition and subtraction skills. They focused on solving multi-step problems, choosing efficient strategies, and using estimation to check that their answers were reasonable.
At the end of each lesson, students have been completing short exit tickets to reflect on their learning and demonstrate their understanding of the concepts covered.

MA3-NSM-02
measures and compares duration, using 12- and 24-hour time and am and pm notation
Creative Arts
In Creative Arts, students have been busy creating their artworks for this weekend's Tumbarumba show. We have been exploring the solar system, making strong connections to our learning in English and Science. Students have been developing their skills and exploring watercolours, using blending techniques to create depth, colour variation, and visual impact in their work.
It has been fantastic to see their creativity, attention to detail and growing confidence as they bring their space-inspired artworks to life. We look forward to sharing these with you at the show!
HSIE
In HSIE, students have been learning about how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples use their deep knowledge of Country to care for the environment. They explored how Elders and Knowledge Holders observe the land, water, sky, plants, animals and seasonal changes to understand and manage different environments. Through examples such as the Gondwana Rainforests and by comparing seasonal calendars from different groups, students discovered that knowledge of Country is unique to each place. They learned that this knowledge helps guide important practices such as caring for waterways, protecting plants and animals, and managing fire. Students also explored how this important knowledge continues to be used today to care for and protect the environment in sustainable and respectful ways for the future.
