SSV Swimming Success

SSV Wellington

Catholic College Sale swimmers have made a huge splash in the opening rounds of the School Sport Victoria (SSV) swimming competition.

At the first round of competition held at the Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre, our interschool swimming team delivered an outstanding performance. All 34 CCS swimmers placed either first or second in at least one of their events, meaning the entire team qualified for the Gippsland Finals.

Standout individual performances included:

  • Xavier Gray – five first place finishes
  • Zach Gray – five first place finishes
  • Jasmine Lazzaro – four first place finishes
  • Josh Morton – four first place finishes

Beyond their strong performances in the pool, our students represented the College with pride. They displayed excellent behaviour, wore their uniforms impeccably and supported one another throughout the day.

SSV Gippsland Finals

At the SSV Gippsland Finals, hosted by Aqua Energy in Sale, the 34-strong CCS team competed against the best swimmers from across the region in challenging, wintery conditions. Their efforts saw nine Catholic College Sale students qualify for the SSV State Swimming Finals.

Xavier and Zachary Gray both enjoyed tremendous success. Xavier claimed five individual first place medals and was part of a winning relay team, while Zachary secured four wins — two individual events and two relays.

Xavier swam a vital butterfly leg in the 15–16 Years Boys Medley Relay, teaming up with Lachlan Arnup, Hayden Lazzaro and Jonathan Sulyman to take first place. Zachary was also part of two winning relay teams:

  • 12–14 Boys Medley Relay with Zayden Vine, Josh Morton and Jack Cartwright
  • 12–13 Boys Freestyle Relay with Zayden Vine, Jack Cartwright and Jayden Rayner

Lachlan Arnup also claimed victory in the 16 Boys 50m Freestyle.

These students will now represent Catholic College Sale at the SSV State Swimming Finals at MSAC on 23 April.

CCS has had a strong win it its opening rounds of SSV Cricket preliminary round of the Year 7 SSV Cricket competition, defeating Sale College by 123 runs. Batting first, Alfie Adam top scored with 35 * retired. He was aptly aided by Co-captains Ted Elliot and Kash Sullivan who both registered 18* retired, as CCS posted 4/149 from it’s 20 overs. In response, all CCS bowlers put in excellent performances, but it was Fletcher Fyfe’s 3/0 of two overs that really stood out.

The team join the CCS Year 9/10 team who also put in a strong performance at the first round of competition, with wins over Sale College and Kurnai College. Both teams progress to the Wellington Final which will be held later this year.

Bairnsdale Clay Target Shooting

Catholic College Sale’s Cay Target team has put in a tremendous performance at the recent Riviera Secondary Schools Championships, with three students coming away with very pleasing results.

Patrick Horan shot 19 out of 20 targets for the day, to be crowned the ‘Overall High Gun’ competitor of the competition.

Caleb Short was just one target behind, hitting 18/20 on his way to claiming first place in the Senior Boys category.

Charlie Hall’s 15/20 was enough to put him in a shoot-off for first place. Charlie managed to hit all five targets, to win the shoot-off and claim first place overall.

The three CCS students are pictured with Shanrah Ross, Bairnsdale’s local District Firearms Officer. In the team’s event, CCS’ best squad finished equal 3rd, just two targets off the team from Orbost SC. Well done to Cooper Rand, Will Cook, Josh O’Brien, Jy Higgins and Asher Higgins for being a part of this team.
