Grade 4 News

Dear Year 4 Families,

We are almost at the end of Term 1 and it has been a busy, productive and fun term! Firstly we welcome Mrs Mary Alexander to our team who is the teacher of 4D.

English:

We completed a text analysis of ‘Storm Boy’ by Colin Thiele and students are excited about watching the film in the last week of term. We have also explored a book by Margaret Wild titled ‘The Stone Lion’ and students have had the chance to analyse how characters change in a text. Both of the texts we used encouraged students to develop their vocabulary, including the use of stronger and weaker synonyms and antonyms for a word.

In our Morphology/ Fluency block, students have learnt many prefixes and suffixes, such as:

Prefix over-

Prefix sub-

Prefix out-

Prefix mid-

Suffix -ness

Prefix inter-

Prefix im-

In Grammar and Syntax we have explored concrete and abstract nouns, run on sentences, verbs, determiners, adverbs and more.

Maths:

In Maths we have learnt about Place Value including decimal tenths and hundredths. In geometry, we have learnt to classify and estimate angles. For parents who want to use real life scenarios to encourage mathematical thinking at home, playing board games with your child such as Monopoly, cooking from a recipe and having an analog clock at home are ways students can practise skills that will be taught over the year.

Wimba Sport is a well loved hour of our week and we have some photos to share with students. We also have photos from a gallery walk share of our students displaying their Humanities work this term.

A reminder to send your admin forms to school if you have not already, these are the blue forms that most students were given at Parent Student Teacher Conversations. Cross Country is Monday 30th March 11:30am-1:30pm.

We look forward to Term 2!
