Grade 1 News

Good afternoon Grade 1 Families,

What a wonderful term one our Grade 1 cohort has been having. We cannot believe we are almost at the holidays! It has been pleasing to see the growth the students have been making, as they continue to work hard across all areas of their learning.

Classroom Snapshot

English

In English, the students have been learning the long vowel sounds /oo/, /or/, /oy/, /ar/, /er/, /ou/ and /are/. The students have been working hard to read and write words containing these different sounds. It has been pleasing to see them carefully segmenting and applying their knowledge of the sounds in their independent learning. In writing the students have continued to work on using carefully selected adjectives to add detail to their writing. Often challenging themselves to use the vocabulary words they have been learning, such as the word ‘miniscule’ and 'persistent'.

Maths

The students have been working on place value, as well as creating and continuing number patterns in Maths. They have enjoyed counting by 2s, 5s and 10s, and finding the missing numbers in patterns.

Humanities

In Humanities, the students have been learning all about the seven continents of the world. They have been working on locating the continents on the map, and describing different key constructed and natural features within each of the continents. The students have also been working on describing how people can look after the different features and landmarks of the continents, such as Uluru and the Taj Mahal.

SEL

Over the past few weeks in Social and Emotional Learning, the students’ learning has been centred around emotional literacy. The students have enjoyed engaging in games, discussions and activities aimed at building their capacity to recognise and identify their own emotions, describe situations that might evoke different emotions and showing an awareness of the feelings and needs of others.

Reminders

  • Please label all items of school uniform to ensure a quick return if they are lost

Have a great weekend,

The Grade One Team.
