Grade 6 News

Classes 6A and 6B
Hello to our Grade 6 community. It has continued to be an incredibly busy first term of 2026, filled with lots of learning and whole school events. We've been very pleased with the effort, learning and dedication that students have shown so far in being positive members of Wimba Primary School.
What's been happening in the classroom?
English
In the past few weeks, students have been learning about hero narratives. We had a major focus on using vivid and emotive language to provide more detail about their storyline, characters and setting. Students then worked through the writing process, by planning, drafting and publishing their own hero narrative.
Maths
We have previously completed a unit on integers, focusing on positive and negative numbers. Students learned about counting between positive and negative integers, comparing the size of integers and applying knowledge of positive and negative integers in financial contexts, such as profit and loss when forming a budget. The students made significant growth throughout the unit.
Humanities
We are currently learning about British Colonies in Australia and what life was like in Australia after British settlement. Students have been creating their own timeline of events based on what they’ve been learning about. This has included the role of convicts on colonies, free settlers, farming and opportunities provided for free settlers and convicts in colonies.
Current/ Upcoming Learning
Below represents our current, or upcoming units of work in english and mathemetics, which will carry into the early stages of next term. If you would wish to use this as a guide to support your child with their home learning, then you are more than welcome to do so.
English: Historical Recounts/ Narratives: Creating a realistic story that is based around a historical event. E.g Creating a story based on the perspective of an ANZAC soldier.
Maths: Adding and subtracting decimals to thousandths.
Multiplying and dividing decimals by powers of 10.
Summer Gala Day
On the 25th March, our Grade 6 students participated in the Summer Gala Sport Day, competing against other schools in the local area. We participated in cricket, basketball, T-ball and volleyball. Each team won at least one game and played with enthusiasm, integrity and skill. Well done to all of the students who represented our school at this event and a thank you to all of the staff who helped coach and support each team in preparation and on the day of the event.
Reminders:
Cross Country is next Monday 30th March. It will be on site at Wimba Primary School. Ensure that your child is wearing comfortable shoes to run in. Your child’s teacher will support your child with any further information during the day.
Phillip Island Camp
We currently have close to 50 students who have paid or partially paid for camp. As we can only reserve a spot for 54 students to attend camp, we only have a few spaces left for other students to attend. A 25% deposit, or full payment is required for a place to be reserved for your child to attend camp. Please refer to the 5/6 Phillip Island Camp event on Compass for any further information.
